If this tank has been set up relatively recently, brown algae, which are probably diatoms, can be a common occurrence. They do disappear in time, although it's annoying in the interim. They are usually easy to clean off manually, using your hands on plants and a sponge or magic eraser for the glass. I had one tank bothered by these that started a couple of months after the tank was set up and running and took a few more months to go away. I hated this tank for some time and it's now one of my favorites. Sometimes, otocinclus can also be of help.

Thank you Sue, this tank hs been established for a good time now. I started this tank with pool sand. then made it 50/50 sand and substrate. stayed like this for a while and eventually got the brown algae. Then I read somewhere about the diatoms and how pool sand feeds them because of the silica I believe. So I recently removed the sand and now I have a mixture of some of the old black substrate and 3 new bags of CaribSea Eco complete coarse substrate. Pretty much all the plants in the tank are all new with the substrate as well. Every single leaf has the algae on it so manually cleaning them would be pretty much insane... I m having great growth with CO2 and root tabs as well as plenty of light, but after 2 days the new growth gets the algae as well. I just hope it goes away with time like yours did I guess.
