Default my betta died but i replanted my 5 gallon contour

So replanted my five gallon marineland contour tank since my betta fish gavin passed from natural causes.

I have the aquarium co op bundle coming for better ferts than what just the flourish provides. Bundle comes with Iron and CO2 plus the all in one that has micro and macro nutrients and root tabs.

My question is do you think that the jungle val i put in the back left is too close to the heater for the tank. I read online that it takes vals 4 weeks to start growing again after being moved, and i only used the runners off the main plant since the main plant had that metal tie around it which constricted some of it's circulation towards the roots. click the links to see the images since i can't get them to upload to the message correctly.

this is a picture of the algae or debris on my anubias

this is a picture of the eyedropper i use to dose my ferts. I use about a half a eyedropper of flourish twice a week, but will be using the aquarium coop fert when it arrives thursday.

Sorry to hear that you've lost your betta. RIP Gavin.

For your anubias, you can use your gravel vac during a w/c. Just wave the tube near the leaf and use the vac to suck up debris. It looks like debris to me.

I don't use ferts, so can't speak to that.

In my tank, the jungle val did not do well and since I have lots of anubias, it made me question if the two do well, confined together. You have probably read about how some plants inhibit others. But then again, I think there are other members here that have both in their tanks - perhaps those tanks are larger though. I'm just sharing my thoughts with you. I do not have knowledge that this is the case.

    Best wishes for your rebuild!

Thank you. Waiting to decide if i will put another betta/dwarf gourami in that tank or just leave it as plants only. though this will give it time to properly cycle again if i wait the four week period. If need be i can make it just a val tank if it looks like things are getting a little taken over by the vals.

I can't put any smaller fish in the tank because it the current from the uv scrubber and the actual tank would be too strong for them. Though since vals do very well in hard water that was a good choice for a secondary plant. If i wasn't concerned about crypto melt i might have used those in the tank instead of the anubias.

Since the API freshwater kit always gives a false reading of somewhere between zero and .25 that's not the reading i am worried about (also the aqueon substrate leeches ammo at the start) but i was a little concerned about the nitrite which was between zero and .25 and not a true zero reading. This may be due to the substrate causing a mini cycle, so that's the other reason i'm waiting.

If you leave the tank as plants-only, it doesn't need to be cycled.

hmmm what do you think should i leave it as plants only? as much as i love betta fish i don't like to always keep having to replace them. And with hard water it does make it harder for their colors to stay true than with more balanced water.

If i leave it as plants only what should i add?

no i mean i am actually considering leaving it as a planted tank with NO FISH this time around. I have the val in the back and the anubias in the front and i just started dosing carbon from the aquarium co op bundle yesterday when it arrived as well as my first dose of iron and the all in one fert they have. i dosed half an eyedropper.

my lighting is from 10am to 7pm daily and my uv scrubber runs on the same timing.

could i add any other plants to the aquascape?

    please advise

You have to decide what you most want for this tank of yours. It is your fun project, so follow your heart with what speaks to you.

If you wished to do so, you could even start off plants only (like Slap said, there would be no need to cycle it in that case) and then if you later decided you wanted a critter, you could start cycling at that time.

You follow the path that your mind gets excited about. There is fun to be had! Enjoy.
