    Default Greetings from Ohio

I'm a 59 year old man, and I've dreamed about getting a nice, big aquarium of angelfish for over ten years. It's a long, complicated story, but that is yet to happen. I've been reading and watching Youtube videos for about the last year, and I've learned a lot. It's amazing some people have such a different approach to keeping their fish happy and healthy. It's been a real education for me.

When we were children, we had a 20 high aquarium. You know...the ones with a steel frame, undergravel filter and a long incandescent light bulb. We had it for years, which now seems amazing since we knew virtually nothing about aquarium upkeep! We NEVER did a water change, and if we did, we wouldn't have treated the chlorinated water with anything. I can recall having a small angelfish, danios, a swordtail and perhaps a few neon tetras over the years.

Fast forward about 40 years.... In mid February, I finally gave in and got two beautiful male bettas that I have in separate 5.5 gallon tanks. Even though I thought I was mentally prepared, it's been a trial by fire. First, I never imagined two small tanks would cost so much money in the end and could be so much work ! I can only imagine what some people are shelling out for there room full of tanks.

Two days after setting up the tanks, my beautiful white and red Rosetail was missing a neat, half-round chunk out of his tail. Things progressed from there until he nearly lost the whole thing. Thankfully, he did not lose it all, and it seems to be growing back now. After a week or so, in my Black Orchid tank, the water was getting progressively cloudy no matter how many massive water changes I made. I decided I had to change the "natural" colored gravel. It turns out the gravel was dissolving and turning the water to mud.

Even though I'm using small fiters in each tank, I've never been able to get these tanks to cycle properly. The other issue is, when these guys are blowing their bubble nests, it seems to gum up the hole works. I've been researching alternatives, but there are few options. Any filter that is large enough to hold various types of media are too large with too much flow for a small betta tank. I'm not crazy about sponge filters, but I may have to give in eventually.

Sorry for babbling. A bit long for an introduction, but that's where I'm at.

It would be best to start a journal of your new experience with fish in the General or Beginner fishkeeping section of the forum, you won't get much help in the Intro section...I can help with that, just let me know

    Welcome!

I agree with starting a journal. Give us details like tank size, start date, substrate, filtration, heater? This thread is just an initial greet.
