Thanks so much for the advice. The Corys seem fine with the flow and the Bumblebees sort of duck under the wave and swim underneath - they seem fine as well. I started having an issue with diatoms on the leaves of the big plant then slowly tiny bits on the heater and other plants so I thought maybe the flow will help. I clean and scrub them off, but they always come back. We'll see. That's a whole other issue...
The bamboo has been in the same spot each night that I come home, filtering away. Since I'm target feeding a bit as well, I'm guessing he's doing well. I check the tank in the morning (lights off) and he's usually hiding some where.
BTW - I use the API liquid test kit and yes this is my first tank : )

Sounds like a good plan...looks like you have sand substrate, correct?...could be the cause of the diatoms, depending on what kind it is...what kind of lighting do you have?
Keep an eye on your params, the bamboo will add some bioload if it is eating well...just avoid overfeeding, for the sake of the whole tank
