Post 20 gallon aquarium stocking help

    Hello,
I use to keep a few tanks about 6 years ago when i was 13, but i had stopped as i had lost intrested
I recently aquired a 20 gallon tank and i would like to get back into the hobby.
I know about cycling and i already have a test kit and plan to get a little filter media from my brothers established tank to speed up the cycle.
going to use a aquaclear 30 and a topfin filter rated for 20 gallons as my filters
kinda got a rough idea of what i want in the tank but i am not sure if it can work.
    was thinking
-a pair of german blue rams Or kribensis (more if i can)
    -a dwarf gourami
-8 or so cardinal tetra (open to suggestions for other small schooling fish)
-maybe some platy or guppy if i have room
-maybe a pair of oto later on if i develop alage
I am open to suggestions and in need of guidance as I am learning about all of this again.
    thank you.

Hello, welcome back to the hobby.

In regards to rams vs kribs, go rams. Be aware that if you have a pair of rams they we be highly aggressive when spawning. Also the electric blue rams are very short lived.
The dwarf gourami is OK, just be aware that they are very inbred and prone to iridovirus, so also short lived.

Nice small tetra is an ember tetra. You could put a dozen in the 20.

If you go guppies or endlers try to get all males. With the rams a breeding population will be controlled but without the rams the tank will quickly be over run with offspring.

I am never a fan of getting fish to solve issues like algae and with the other stock, I wouldn't reccomend 2 ottos.

    Thanks for your suggestions/help.
I have kept rams before and I know about the territorial behaviour if they breed, I have a few caves and lots of hiding spots so I'd hope that can manage it.
ember tetras are cool, I don't think my lfs has them but I will keep a look out. Perhaps some flame tetra?
Not sure on the guppy or platy yet
I have started a fish-in cycle with 3 small zebra danios last night and added some old filter media as well. I got danios because I know they are hardy for cycling
i likely will return the danio once the cycle is well established. I would do a fishless cycle but I can never find pure ammonia and i hate using fish food/other methods
also when i start adding my actual stock, which fish should I add in first, second...
I know the rams should be added in last as they are a sensitive fish.

Just to play the other side. I prefer kribs over rams and a nice proven pair or carefully chosen potential pair are wonderful for color. They do well with most any small dither type fish, breed readily (if they are fond of each other) but can like rams be quite territorial with fry loose. I have a pair and they have been placed into a 55 community tank to control their never ending fry. They keep to a particular are and the other fish mostly stay out lol

I would love to get kribensis, just worried about aggression in a rather small tank.
I havent been able to find german blue rams so far so I might have to get kribensis however.
as far as the cycle goes, 24 hrs after the danio have been added i still am not seeing any ammonia nitrite or nitrate readings. thinking about getting some more danio to increase the bio load since I already have seeded filter media. i also like the danio over guppies but dont think I can keep them as they prefer cooler water if I get rams.
    thanks

Yes, 3 small danios won't produce enough ammonia to cycle even a small tank like you have, I'm afraid

    Is this a 20 high or a 20 long?

I maintain cycles in my assorted 20g tanks with 6-8 danios. I keep them in a tank in my room in the meantime that holds all my assorted various plants, sponge filters, snails, runty fish, deformed fish etc. Sometimes more but I don't think less than 6 would even hold a cycle let alone make one they really are a pretty low waste fish.

ok i am going to the fish store now, i will get at least 5 more danio and perhaps a gourami if I see one I like. I am worried about starving the bacteria from the old filter.
thanks for the help, appreciate it.

Good plan, just keep an eye on params, WC's if ammonia gets too high (<.25 ppm)
