It all has to do with "political correctness" -- and almost deliberate attempts to get people into trouble by misinterpreting their intentions (even if, on some level, they know better). If in doubt, give the benefit of the doubt. Ask for clarification of meaning, if one really isn't sure. It's part of the larger "nanny state" mentality. And a concerted effort by those in positions of power, even if that "power" is only being a moderator, to control what people say, and therefore what they think. This is a dangerous and scary direction in which our society is going, and it seems to be permeating the masses so that people get out of the habit of thinking for themselves -- which was once considered a positive trait and encouraged.

Its not a political issue at all- far from it. Thats too easy. For instance, I would gather from the language you are speaking ( "political correctness" and "nanny state") that you are a conservative Republican. Am I correct? The language we use often reflects our political leanings. But, like you say, these leanings can be misinterpreted. So, correct me if I am wrong.

The funny thing is is that I am as liberal a democrat as you will find and, yet, we agree in the underlying problem --- autonomous, critical thinking has become scarce.

But, I would not say that this issue is "political correctness" or due to the issues emerging from a "nanny state". To me, that is just a cop out that allows individuals to think that their thoughts and actions are not their own-- they are without responsibility.

Critical, autonomous thinking can begin now- right when one chooses it.

Many times a forum starts to develop a "group think" that causes alarm bells to go off when someone comes in and tries to change the narrative. These views and that member become a "nuisance" and, eventually, are shut down/shut out.

For example: I found a new fish-keeping forum a week ago that I joined. The very first day when I was helping someone with an illness question I was told by a moderator that I was "at risk of an infraction." The reason why? It was because I asked this moderator who was also helping the member with the sick fish why they were recommending the medications that they were recommending. This moderator said "because that is the recommended forum protocol." So, I said, "Okay, what illness are you diagnosing this fish with and how will the active ingredients in the meds you are recommending help?" This moderator took it personally ( their ego was wounded) instead of finding this moment as an opportunity for the OP to learn.
When did asking someone why when they post something become such a problem...
"because that is the recommended forum protocol." This is what irritates me sometimes. I like to have the various, often differing, opinions of individuals who have experienced what I might be asking about, or who can refer me to information sources that have helped them in some area, or even just an off the cuff opinion of what they might do, given other situations they've had. I try to structure any postings I make in this way, too. Not just the "everybody says so" response.

Some of the people who run those sites totally lack respect, and some folks on them are downright hateful, and people follow like sheep and perpetuate the bullying, the insults, and the hatred. I think it's dangerous, and that's another reason I stay off social media and choose my forums carefully.
Hmm yeah, I have had some fun with them. Hence why my gender if trans on face book.

All it takes is screen shot.
Complain for gender discrimination and face book fixes it. And a apology comes my way. Easy hack

They interact personally with the people in their lives. They communicate by more direct means. Anyone close to me who wants to get in touch, or stay in touch, knows there are four ways they can do so: They can call me, they can email me, they can write me, or (with reasonable advanced notice), they can visit me.
Yeah, whatsapp!!! WTF, I hate it, but forced to use it. Not for long tho. Our government want to implement a structure whereby they can send you traffic fines via whatsapp. I will be deleting it when this happens. For now it stays as there are some activity groups I belong to and its easier to send a msg, wait a day or 2 for a response. I prefer just making a call, and having a good old chat. It is also easier to make a call to arrange meetings etc than just sending a msg and waiting for a response!!

The app on my phone updates okay. But no new conversation notification unless I search for it manually.

Something is not right, and our boss is well and truly AFK.
