Default Things sure have changed in 15 years

Back in early 1990 I got started with my first aquarium. It was a different environment then. There were dozens of independent shops locally to choose from. Most were well stocked with friendly knowledgeable staff. I stayed in the hobby until 2004 when I my first child was born. Recently my second child won a betta fish at a church carnival. It wasn't well cared for and died the same day. Not to be discouraged she and I have started the cycling process in hopes of housing guppies to start her interest.

In the 15 years since I last had fish the retail environment for fishkeeping has changed. The multitude of independent shops have dwindled to a few with big box stores the norm. A couple of the independents we visited did not seem interested in keeping their doors open. They were poorly stocked both fish and equipment wise and customer service was lacking. We also visited several large chain stores. Some were nicely stocked with friendly attentive staff, others not so much. Like so many hobbies it seems the internet and big box stores have replaced the personal touch of the mom and pop shop.

I am sadden by the change. I enjoyed hanging out at the various shops. I learned a lot from shopkeepers, their staff and the other patrons. That community is gone leaving me to rely on the internet for answers to my questions. Anyone here remember a time when mom and pop shops were the norm?

I happen to be one of the fortunate ones with a really good LFS within 10 minutes from me that I've been going to for over 15 yrs. There are a few others within 60-90 minutes although I've only visited one of them once several years ago.

There's lots of information to be had on-line through forums, Facebook and YouTube. But if you have to buy fish on-line, that can get expensive because of the shipping costs. I've had fish shipped a few times, but fortunately most of what I've wanted has been available to me through my LFS, who will also special order fish if available through his suppliers.

I have a couple good LFS 30-90 minutes from the house. When I was a child a LFS got me in the hobby, thank you Shasta Pet Center. Unfortunately they sold the business to a couple Tha ran it to the ground within a year. That was over 20 years ago.

I only started in the hobby about 2004, but when all the info started popping up on the net, I realized how much I didn't know and how much I was steered in the wrong direction by the big box stores.

I do have one good LFS mom and pop with fairly knowledgeable staff and good fishkeeping practices. But honestly, there's just no time to really get into good conversation unfortunately. The staff are busy helping customers with basic problems. But I do really love to have a good convo the once in a while I get to.

What I have noticed, is it's best to get all the info and get an opinion for yourself. And I suppose you learn a lot thru experience.

Welcome back to the hobby and to the AC! I've learned so much here and hoping you do too!

I have been in the hobby with a couple breaks since 1989 and holy smokes has it changed. I agr6, I miss the mom and pop touch too. I've always lived rural and so big box stores are a hassle and impersonal and mostly seem in it for the dollars. I miss the tremendous advice and a couple years back relented and come to the internet. I'd had small tanks and done everything mostly the same for several years prior to a big move where I sold most everything I owned including my aquarium equipment. Coming back into it I was looking to update myself and my practices a bit and see if I could perk a bit of interest in my son with a good old fashioned 55g, it worked by the way .

I spoke many times in passing to the owners of the little pet store where I live now and they've really come around. I've freely shared some of my breeding adventure bounties a few times and now they've become involved with a fish and reptile "show" that they have coming to town twice a year (our second ever event in October this year). A bit of kindness, understanding and a few casual comments on different things with some well inspired and intentioned ideas and a unfortunate need for a quick second opinion on a bad streak I hit with my tanks has truly brought some small but of fortune to them and their store as well as allowed me to begin having a bit of that little something I miss so much.... like custom orders and personal cell numbers lol

yes there have been quite a few differences since I got my first tank back in 1958. had a big 12 gallon with slate bottom. the only thing I see that is the same is gravel and water.
had mostly molly's, sward tail and angle fish. the man that lived behind me in Pa. raised tropical fish for mom and pop sales and he sold them to me at give away prices but I was only 11yrs old so I guess he took pity on me.

There are a couple of combination LFS and general pet stores that I have regularly used, and most of the time, they've been pretty good. They are quite some distance away, however, which is inconvenient, and I won't buy anything online.

I, too, have noticed in a lot of these big box stores impersonal non-service, and at times, downright rudeness from the staff.

But, I've also encountered arrogant, huffy attitudes from the personnel of some of the smaller shops, as well -- like they consider the customer an inconvenient, ignorant nuisance that they're being forced to contend with, and instead being eager to help, they act like they're doing the customer a favor by assisting them, at all.

I've seen cashiers talking at length on their phones at the checkout stands while customers are lined up waiting to be processed. And not all of those calls have anything to do with the business at hand.

It really doesn't matter whether the establishment is large or small. If they hire the wrong people, the experience for the customer is the same.

What I find really annoying in these larger stores is nobody on hand in the various departments to help if I have a question or need some assistance. Instead, I have to walk several yards (clear across to the other side of the store, in many cases) just to find ONE person (IF I'm lucky), who may or may not summon someone to that department. No salespeople at all on any of the floors to help anybody.

And then they complain about internet shopping cutting into their business. Perhaps, if they tried to be more helpful, they would have more brick-and-mortar customers.
