Yeah, the bio-media in this filter is kind of crummy. I took it out and submerged it in conditioned water when I made the last change. I'll look into adding a supplementary bio-filter in the next few days. That or get the 55 gallon cycling. Another problem is the shark isn't eating much, so even with light feeding, there is a lot of waste.

Get some ceramic media, there's plenty of good ones out there available, I like these, but you'll have to bag them: https://www.amazon.com/Fluval-Biomax.../dp/B000HHSG5M

The shark doesn't need to eat every day, I feed my fish every two or three days...overfeeding is much more harmful than underfeeding

The thing with the water changes is, with the 50% change it's going from .50 ppm to .25ppm, and then jumping back to .50 the next day. I would rather get it well under .25ppm.
You can do larger water changes to get the ammonia down more, try 75% or even 80% WC. You can even do two 50% WC within a day to help lower the levels. Just make sure to add Prime every time.

Yeah, this is what I have done. The test read .25ppm this AM instead of .5ppm, so I'm getting it under control. Hoping to get a nitrite read in a few days! I always dose with Prime.

The problem is, I'll have to tear up this cheap hood to add another filter. I know I shouldn't remove the media that I have now, or I'll mess with my cycle. I do have one idea though. The replaceable media is just a cotton bag with carbon in it. Could I remove the carbon and add the cotton into the bio-bag with ceramic media?

Yes, you could...you don't need the carbon, anyway, I'd use the space it takes up for more ceramic media

Bacteria will also grow on the carbon during a cycle.

OK. Either way, I think it could be condensed a bit. It's not optimal, but there would still be water flow through it.

Wait until you are cycled, then replace the carbon with ceramics

    Okay. That sounds the easiest.
