    If you use plexiglass as a lid it is much easier to cut holes in! I switched my back panels of glass to plexiglass, and cut around my filter tubes almost perfectly. Im sure I get some evaporation, but I never notice my water level drop in-between water changes. If i ever move this tank closer to a light source I may cut holes in it and add some emersed plants.

    I had this croton growing out of my 33g for probably a year now. It has grown nice long white roots hanging into the tank. It grows very slowly though. This is one of the toxic plants, but my fish don't eat it and have been very healthy.

    I'm not wanting to endorse using random houseplants, but I did it, fish are fine, and the plants grow better there then at my patio door.
