Why not just have a tiger barb tank? You can get albinos and greens and glo tigers to go with the regular tigers. If you want a catfish, look into synodontis cats.

Indeed they have, like the guy with the 800G tank in the video above

If I wanted to try TB's in a 38G tank, it would be them only, no other fish

I’ve seen videos with much smaller community tanks with tiger barbs but obvious that’s probably few and far between.

Having a 3 inch schooling fish in a smaller tank definitely isn't ideal. A lot of people see the small ones in stores and think they will be fine in their 20g tank, but they grow pretty big. They are also really active fish that benefit from a longer tank

I would not try it, It's not worked out for me the two time I've tried it in the past.

Yeah they had them in all sizes at gerbers tropical fish store today(I think you said you had been there before). Every think from 1” tiger barbs for 99 cents to full grown close to 3 Inch ones. Everything I read says that for tiger barbs minimum tank size is a 20 gallon/24” length. My tank is a 38 gallon/36” long. Obviously that isn’t a “big tank” but I wouldn’t exactly consider it small...kindof low mid range? I think for now I am going to stick with the serpaes I have and maybe offload the one that causes what little troubles I still have. In a while(year or two or whenever they start to die of old age) I’ll likely switch to some sort of barb, ideally those five banded barbs, but possibly a TB tank. Seems like I could fit 18 of them or so comfortably if I didn’t have anything else in there.

Just curious, what exactly did you try? What tank size? What other fish did you attempt with them?

Both times I had to lower the water in tank, remove plants and decorations in order to remove the TB's and return them to the LFS, even though everybody was stressed out it was better than watching them slowly kill everything :(
