Thanks Rivers. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, and all is going well with you. I can't get new post updates with Edge anymore so sorry if I have missed any of your updates. Only time I see anything "new" is if I am not logged in, as soon as I do they all dissapear on me.

Also sorry for my typo, it is Medicaid I will see if she is eligible for.Medicare is what has the 100 day limit.

First, try Chrome again for new posts. I stopped being able to get new posts also from Edge, but now Chrome works just fine for me.

I was going to ask you about this - Medicare vs Medicaid - until I saw your correction here. This is a little long rant, but this stuff drives me nuts and is often difficult for folks to wade through - with reason. Also, I have really bad insomnia lately so I need something to do at 4 am.

I went through this with both of my parents years ago but because the last 12 years of my career was spent managing a unit of staff that did billing to both Medicare and Medicaid as well as private insurers, I fortunately had the knowledge to navigate the system. We were not, however, involved in the application process to get the benefits, but only the billing for services after benefits were available. So processing applications for Medicaid benefits for my parents was eye opening, even for me at the time. But I had resources available to me that others do not. My brother had power of attorney for my parents so I had to write a letter for him to sign to allow me access to my parents' financial information to support my application.

The Medicaid rules do vary from State to State, but I'll let you know about two instances that drove me crazy and also almost cost my parents or my brother and I a lot. My parents were probably a lot older than yours, though, and in poorer health, so you may not have to deal with this yet. In his last several months, my father went from assisted living (private pay) to the hospital and then to nursing care. From there, he was back and forth a number of times between the hospital and the nursing home. After returning to the nursing home one of the times, my brother was told his Medicare days were running out and we would have to pay starting on a certain date, which my brother did. I did the math and the nursing home was incorrect. I also had access to the Medicare and Medicaid systems so I was able to provide them a print out of my father's remaining Medicare days. They admitted their error, and refunded the payment my brother made. My father passed away in a hospital before even running out his Medicare days.

My mother went directly from assisted living to the nursing home with no hospital stay in between. So her Medicare nursing days could not be used in her case and I started the Medicaid application process right away, and the nursing home waited out the process. In my State, Medicaid coverage is effective retroactively to the date of the initial application filing, even if you have to make several edits to that application that might take months to process. Medicaid kept asking me for more and more backup - like tracking ending balances of one bank account we closed, to showing the deposit of those funds into another of their accounts, along with accumulated bill balances we had paid. But during the months this took for approval she needed some dental care which cost $3000 and which we had to pay out of pocket. Upon approval of her Medicaid, back to her original admission date, this cost was then a covered service by Medicaid and they paid. It took me at least 6 months to get reimbursed by the dentist after Medicaid paid them. Again, because I had access to the Medicaid system, I was able to print out from that system the duplicate payments made to the dentist, ours and Medicaid's. Finally, he relented and reimbursed us in full.

Hopefully, you'll be able to obtain coverage for your mother if she needs this nursing care. Just keep your eye on everything as you go through the process.

Thank you Sue, medicaid checklist for Il is three pages long...it all so overwhelming with everything else going on. I should have gotten power of attorney when my Mom was cooperating/speaking with me. She is not right now so not sure what to do.

If you believe she will qualify, it is worth the pain. Your father, as spouse, may be a factor too. My father passed away before he needed Medicaid so I only had to go through this for my mother. You might want to check around to see if there are any free services available to assist you with this process. I do know there are lawyers here who specialize in assisting persons in filing applications, but usually for a fee. I was able to get through it myself, but not everyone can.

It is really important to read everything, slowly and carefully - eligibility requirements, documentation needed, etc. - and provide exactly what they want as much as possible. I was very organized, was able to get everything I believed was needed, enclosed a packet of documentation that itemized everything with a cover sheet referencing all that was in there, and they still came back with questions more than once. Example: I had all of their banking records, including closed accounts and newly opened accounts. But rather than Medicaid taking the time to really look at it all and "follow the money", I had to spend time on the phone going over everything with the processing person, breaking down the components of deposits (like the reimbursement from the nursing home for my father - almost $7000 - had to be explained separately), and sometimes resubmitting even more explanations. It took a lot of time to gather and organize the documents, and months of explanation and resubmissions. Fortunately, her nursing home stayed patient and we did not have to lay out any of our own money, except the dentist which we got back.

Mom tested positive for covid, I have no idea how this is going to affect her discharge. Also although they haven't finalized in the mortgage the buyers are stating that they will sign the mortgage closing on Friday and would like to close on the house on Monday. Since they were supposed to close on the mortgage the 30th, I'm not sure if I should hold my breath. I'm really ready for 2020 to be over though, this has been one heck of a year.

Me too. No fever, but she is congested and lost taste, smell and is very fatigued. No one called me to tell me though. They told my Dad and he told us. She is scared though and in isolation.
