Nice to know about the gudgeons in a smaller tank. Not sure what I'll keep in my nano if I start it up....

Sorry about the red pencilfish. Hopefully the original color morph is hardier, or like you say, try them again later. I don't see pencilfish very often, or I never notice, around here.

A little excited to update this. As mentioned earlier in the thread, the 9 red Beckford pencilfish I got about a year and a half ago did not fare well for me. Ultimately, I was left with 2 that are still in my 25g tank. Tonight as I was checking things before lights out, I saw 2 fry!!! The only other fish in here now are my BNP, 2 sterbai cories and 1 rummy nose along with the 2 adult pencilfish (what luck they turned out to be a male/female pair).

This tank is my oldest and also a bit of a mess with a really old large anubias with roots everywhere, some small crypts, old java fern and of course, a messy clump of moss. I've been wanting to tear it down and move the remaining fish elsewhere. But I saw one tiny fry in the moss and one among the roots. Just hoping they make it.

Another good reason I checked the tank - the Cobalt heater was gone, stuck at 94F!! It's just at the 3 yr expiration date and also out of stock both on Amazon and at Cobalt's website. I'll grab something locally tomorrow. The tank temp was fine and should be good until I get out and get another. I do have heaters on hand but they haven't been used for so long, not sure I trust them now, especially overnight when I can't monitor.

But I have red Beckford pencilfish fry!! Crossing my fingers they're there tomorrow. And Cobalt Neo-Therm users, check your heaters often!

Congrats on your fry! Also good timing with the heater. We have had luck with the aquatop heaters, and they are on sale at petmountain and Chewy.com. Planning on making a big purchase for the fish room soon.

Just added a new heater for now (Marineland Visi-Therm) and the 2 fry are still there. They're even colored up and were higher in the tank, out of the roots and moss. Now I wonder how long they've been there. With so few others in this tank I see them all when feeding. So I never really look that closely in the weedy mess. I tried to take a picture but the large anubias kept blocking them - they're still tiny.

Since the Cobalt Neo-Therms are out of stock everywhere, I e-mailed last night to see when they might be available again. I got a response this morning that said they are getting more Neos "that are without problems" by the end of the month. So I've e-mailed back to see if they identified any specific issue that might have been fixed. Waiting for a reply.

So, the temp was stuck on 94F, but the water temp was fine?

Do let us know if you hear back from them, please.

Water was fine, but I may have just caught it in time. I check these heaters everyday since I had 2 others fail within warranty and were replaced. One failed right after a water change so I know what temp the tank was at when done. I plugged it back in and let it sit for a while and the temperature did start climbing. I didn't try that this time - it was after midnight when I was checking. Tank was fine over night and at 74 F this morning.

It should be noted that the heater did not register the "actual" temp at all, just the 94 F as a steady light in red. As you know, the heater is supposed to show the set temp (steady light) and actual temp (flashing slowly if below set temp or fast if above set temp). If set and actual are the same, then you get the single steady light. This thing just crashed so nothing was working as designed.

I'll certainly let you guys know if I get a further response. I'm not sure if they'll fess up publicly to a "known" issue. That could have dire consequences like the stealth heater recall of years ago. Although so far my experiences have been great with their customer service.
