Well I had to learn to line dance, but I did that for love....hey, everybody said I was fun to watch as people with two left feet usually are...thank goodness that was in the days before cell phone cameras.

I remember each class, from kindergarten through fourth grade (those were the years I attended my first elementary school), had to learn a specific folk dance from a specific country, and perform it as a part of our annual May Day festivities. All the parents were invited to come and watch along with the teachers and principal. Those folk dances often meant changing partners throughout the dance, and invariably I would wind up with the one kid in the class who hated me most as a dance partner. He went through the motions, but kept a nasty look on his face the whole time. Not fun!

I remember we had to wear the appropriate costumes, and that sometimes meant parents having to make them. There was a Scottish dance that required my mom to weave red and green crepe paper streamers in and out in a plaid pattern and attach them to a plain skirt underneath. I still remember some of the the dance steps to that one.

In kindergarten, there as a simple May pole and we each grabbed a descending streamer and danced around the pole with it.

We moved away after my fourth grade ended, and the new school didn't require folk dancing, but we did have to attend singing classes with a special music teacher who came by on a predetermined schedule, and learn various folks songs from different cultures.

I remember learning to sing "Waltzing Matilda", an Australian folk song about a thief and a vagabond, and another about a "Kookaburra" (an Australian bird).

There was a song about a snake oil doctor selling his wares in a traveling medicine show, and one about a high seas sailing voyage.

Some of those songs I liked really well, and some I hated, but we all had to learn them.

That makes three of us , but I wished I would have paid more attention to what was being taught and when our Mother RIP, whom was a very dancer, tried to teach us to dance, also I should have paid more attention, than went to school dances and the cool kids could really dance got all the attention, well you get the picture :(

Wow @mermaidwannabe my school definitely didn't have that much culture! In grade school the play we did was about Thanksgiving... The half true story about the One time the European settlers were nice to the Native population lol. I guess the tiny rural school I attended didn't worry much about the outside world :'D
