I agree and that's the first thing I thought. Some of these guys would be in the pop music category now. And hey, it's good to hear from you Matt. For a 50k post guy, you've been all to quiet lately.

Bob Segar, Elton John are both great too... Bowie definitely is on my list though thinking of him as rock doesn't quite sit for me lol.... Another personal all time never gets old to me would be Billy Idol or Mick Jagger.... Those I can stick firmly under Rock in my book. :)

Diamond's music was not pop, or jazz, or anything else but rock.
Keep in mind he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for rock music.

I vote against Neil Diamond for the simple fact that if you bring up his name to almost anyone younger than 45 they will ask you "who?" Those who do know who you're talking about are either old original fans or happen to be the children of people who listened to him.

I don't care for Elvis' music, personally, but he will always be the King. Even those who don't care for his music will instantly recognize his name, his trademark look, and be able to identify a few of his songs. He was in dozens of movies. There have been dozens of movies, hundreds of tabloid tabloids, dozens of conspiracy theories, and countless documentaries about him, and to this day there are over 84,000 (per the IRS/Google) people here in just the US who make money impersonating him. Heck, I've even seen little kids dressed up as Elvis for Halloween and my 5yo son often rocks a pair of Elvis sunglasses. Neil Diamond doesn't stack up anywhere near Elvis.

OP says Elvis isn't the longest-lasting but I disagree. He died years ago but he is timeless and had a huge impact on music and culture. He's been gone for a little over 40 years and you still see things like this:

Big fan of Elvis here. But an even better voice - Roy Orbison. I'm older, what else can I say?

Not sure what genre you'd choose, but I'm a big fan of Bob Dylan, too

one thing I have noticed while trying to think about this is many do not fall into any one category. it is kind of like when someone asks me what or who my favorite band, guitarist, album etc. it come down to what genre and even what day you are asking. example. many say Jimmi Hendrix is the best guitarist. well that all depends on what you are after. there are so many greats in all genre. many that folks have mentioned about being the most iconic are nowhere near my favorites but there is no arguing the impact many have had on music.

If it's too loud you're too old
If it's too fast then it must be thrash

Most iconic in my book would be a toss up, David Bowie, simply because the man changed his style umpteen times, same goes for Prince. Ozzy would have to be in the conversation also.
