    Default First time cycling a HUGE tank!

    Before now the biggest tank I ever cycled was a 45g.

    I bought a 180 gallon a little over a month ago

    Setup:
    Pen Plex Cascade 1500 canister filter. Rated at 350 G.P.H
    2-300w Eheim heaters. One on each side
    150lbs of play sand

    I have been cycling for about 10 days now. I'm using fish flakes. I just sprinkle the flakes from one side of the tank to the other. The highest I saw the Ammonia and Nitrite was after day 6 It clearly was .50 Ammonia and .25 nitrite. I obviously need the ammonia higher at about 2ppm so I sprinkled about the same amount flakes down the tank. At day 9 I tested again and I could not tell the color clearly. It looked like .25 Ammonia and maybe .25 nitrite, but the Nitrite did not look clearly blue,but not as light purple as last time. Yesterday day 10 I dosed about double the amount as the previous 2 times. We'll see what happens. Any advice?

    Using fish flakes to cycle is not the best method, IMO, your ammonia levels can/will fluctuate wildly, it's much more precise (and easier) to use pure ammonia

    Agree!!^^^ A 180g is so exciting! Congrats!!!!

    You can get a bottle of pure ammonia at Ace Hardware, it's inexpensive. Then we can help you with everything.

    Not to mention, those flakes are gonna make a mess!

    I see your stocking plan is pretty interesting though you may need a bigger tank eventually. the Gar is very fun to watch eat.

    My question is before day 8-9 I always had a Nitrite reading of .25,but for the last 4-5 days I have no Nitrite reading. Any tips/suggestions? All though the Ammonia has gone from before day 8-9 of .25-.50 to between .50-1.0 the last 4-5 days.

    Are you using pure ammonia? Perhaps you dosed more ammonia than needed? No nitrite reading suggests you are on your way to cycling, but there shouldn't be any ammonia either. Have you tested your tap water for ammonia? You don't have to change water during a fishless cycle and don't dose ammonia until it tests 0ppm.
    @Slaphppy7 We need help here!

    I paged Matt because he's really good with fishless cycling.
