    1. I'm using Fish Flakes.
    2. I may have over dosed and I will explain why.

    Today is day 14-15.

I test the tank every day. I'm trying to get the ammonia to 2.0 Tap water has 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 5.0 Nitrate. Never tested PH.
Day 1- I lightly sprinkled the tank with fish flakes from one side to the other.

Day 3- The ammonia reading was .25 nitrite .25

Day 4 the the ammonia reading was still .25 and Nitrite was .25 I was trying to get the ammonia to 2.0 so I dosed again the flakes a little heavier trying to get the ammonia reading up.

Day 5,6,7 the ammonia reading was .50 and nitrite .25. Day 7 I sprinkled the tank even heavier trying to get to 2.0 ammonia

Day 8,9,10 the Ammonia reading was .50,but no Nitrite. Day 10 I dosed again even heavier trying to get to 2.0

Day 11,12,13 I got no Nitrite and Ammonia .50 Day 13 I dosed again the tank with Flakes

Day 14. No Nitrite and between .50-1.0 ammonia

Day 15 no nitrite and ammonia of 1.0

Did I not give the tank enough time to build the ammonia to 2.0 or I never dosed enough flakes? Is it safe to say I over dosed? Do I need to do a partial water change now? When I dosed much much smaller tanks I never had problems getting Ammonia to 2.0-3.0 after 3-6 days. I will no longer dose till I see a ammonia reading at 0

That is a huge tank to try to cycle with fish flakes. I've only used ammonia or seeded media from my other tanks. My understanding is that when using fish flakes, the food needs to have time time to rot to start to generate the ammonia you'll need. Even when using pure ammonia tanks can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks (sometimes more) to fully complete the cycle.

My suggestion would be to remove the food and start using pure ammonia. There is a dosing chart for this at the bottom of the page on this site:

I'm going to wait 3-4 more days. If the ammonia does not go down I will start over with pure ammonia.

Whether you have 0.25-3ppm of ammonia, it won't make the speed of the cycle faster. One advantage that flakes have over pure ammonia is that you are building heterotrophic bacteria required to consume organic matter. Using pure ammonia does not build this bacteria.

I may have dosed to much flakes trying to get the Ammonia up to 2.0 that I still have not seen after about 20 days. Highest I seen it is 1.0 and I test daily. I had .25 Nitrite till about day 7,but have had 0 nitrite since. I still have ammonia.

Has your nitrate gone to 10ppm yet or higher?

Still have ammonia and no Nitrite. I stopped testing Nitrate because my tap water has 5.0. I'll test the tanks Nitrate again today.

No nitrite could mean that it is being eaten if your nitrates are higher than 5.0ppm. The constant ammonia could just be the slow rate of decay from the flakes.

Yea so if you test more than 5ppm nitrate, it suggests the nitrites have been processed.
