    Yes, and yes.

I have top dwellers, mid-range dwellers, and bottom dwellers in my 40B, they do just fine.

Could probably add some other fish even with the serpaes in it down the road potentially.

My worry with the barbs is the corys.

I've seen larger tanks with large schools of the serpae with other fish neons even. Guess I start with the tank and making the schools larger and see how their behavior is with those changes and time.

What if I threw a 55 into the mix? Would you still pick the 40b? How about the rest of you?

+1 on the 40b. Really nice tank dimensions for a smaller tank. I see what you are saying with the fish separating, but they will like the extra length, and you should see a difference in activity level with it. I would just add to their numbers instead of getting another type of fish since it should help their activity level as well. I love watching a large group of cory cat's acting goofy on the bottom of a tank!

Now that I have my 18" deep 75g I'd have a hard time going back to a tank with less width. It gives you so much room to work with when you are placing decor.

If you can handle both the 48" length of the 55g and 18" width of the 40B, then why not look at the 75G? You then get the added height you're wanting.
