40 breeders are a fun tank to work with! Somewhat shallow, easy to source, wider for scaping, and less expensive lights with the shorter width. It just really depends what look you want in the space itself lol. :)

If you are for sure changing substrates, then I'd go with sand. Pool Filter Sand (to be specific). I'm redoing my own tanks and they will be sand. The gravel holds to much debris (for me) and it's hard to siphon up everything. With sand the debris sits on top, or flows where the current takes it, making it easy peasy to siphon. The grain for PFS is a bit larger and heavier than other sands making it easy to siphon up the debris without siphoning the sand up with it. It's also better appreciated by for cories since the sand is softer than gravel and allows them to root the bottom way they are meant to.

The advice I always got for tank size was "get the biggest you can".

Sometime soon I think I'm going to move the 29 down to the basement on that big stand and then I'm going to probably put the old 20g on it also and fill it. That should be about 550lbs. Prolly let it like that for a few weeks and see how the stand holds up.
