Default DIY Canister filter?!? For real?

I thought I had a general idea on what I was going to build for my new 55g freshwater tank. As I searched the web looking for new information I came across a diy canister filter build that just seems to good to be true. I'm just wondering if anyone here has tried one like it or has information about it. Seems like a a fairy tale to me, no prefilter, just 4" tubing and two sizes of crushed coral. The salt tank with the two huge clams in it only has this filter, no protein skimmer or even a sock.

This I must research a little.

One thing I did notice was very little bio load. So a clean system with corals shrimp and clam would be not to hard to filter with live rock like is doing.

I had noticed that also but that's just one tank. He has many other tanks with this filter system and a few I seen have a decent load on them. Not over loaded at all, just a good balance. Fish, coral and bottom feeders. He has a ton of videos, I really like the full build he has on video, stand, tank, filter and when he filled it with tap water I was shocked but he commented on this saying not everyone has access to RO water and wanted to make a point that it can be done.

Ten, twenty plus years running a sealed filter. I'm amazed.

In a way I am not obeying the sw community rules.

Natural sea water and canister filter.
    So far so good.

There is always room in the hobby for different methods.
