This tank as you will see, has been started from the very basics. It was brought to my attention that some scuds might be living in my filter. I decided to find out. Our 5 g was just sitting there doing nothing, so I cleaned it up and when I clean the media I clean it, then dump the water into the 5g. The ratio of water is half 29g water and half is treated tap water.

Low and behold after a month and a couple media rinses, there are scuds swimming around, living a care free life. Little do they know I am building a sustainable food source, for some sort of eqautic pet. As you can see I added black worms also. I figure with scuds and black worms and the correct inhabitant(s) they should be sustainable food sources.

    Enjoy

Micro-critters are so fun. My 30g was FULL of almost-microscopic inverts--water fleas, seed shrimp, rotifers, isopods, various worms--that came in on the plants. It was really pretty fascinating, and I was tempted to just leave the tank for them. But the Mrs. had bought me the tank mostly because she wanted some angelfish, and you know what angel fish (and tetras) do with critters small enough to fit in their mouths...Now they're all gone except the isopods.

I watched this earlier when you posted it in the FB group. Very cool :) I liked watching the worms stretching up out of the substrate.

Are you adding food sources for the critters? Or are they sustained by whatever is making up the substrate?

I have add very small pinch of flake food, a couple of times.

Thinking about the food question. Shouldn't different organic sources, produce different types of organic decay? Giving the scuds and black worms a smorgasbord of decay feast on.

Instead of using flake food, I through a broken up stick in the tank and I have a few hand fills of crumbled up leaves soaking in a baggie. Might go in tonight or tomorrow.
