    Default Bruce Lee's Castle

Bless me, Aquatic Community, for I have sinned.

I hardly ever make impulse purchases, but whoo boy did I make one. A couple weeks ago, we wandered through the Walmart pet section, and there was this tiny, 1" fiddler crab. It didn't have a dry land area or a hiding place, but it would drop into a kung-fu stance and wave its claw menacingly every time a molly would cruise past. I spontaneously added the "Hwaaa, hwaaaa" sound effects, and we started calling him Bruce Lee.

Mrs. Badger and the Badgerling were cooing and begging, and it WAS pretty darn cute, and well, I caved. And so there has been a fiddler crab living in my SE Asia tank for the past couple weeks or so.

Once I got home and did some reading, I thought, Oh crud, what have I done. Fiddler crabs, of course, need a land area. This little guy was able to get out on the java ferns and the backdrop, so good enough. But they also need brackish water, which is a problem in this soft water tank. Badgerling has been asking for her own tank for a year or so, and our tap water is about half brackish anyway, and I'm always up for a new adventure, so here we go: A planted brackish tank.

We purchased a 7 gallon Reflex 26, a really nice looking little tank with an integrated filter and a smallish LED fixture. Had to modify the filter pump so I could lower the water level, and had to add an extra light fixture so I can grow plants. Badgerling was allowed to pick out one (only one) decoration, and she chose a rather cool looking castle. I had in mind this mini iwagumi style scape, with rock mountains sticking up above the water to provide the crab some land area. But it's her tank, and she wanted a castle and a tree branch. So. Bruce Lee's Castle it is.

Stocking will be pretty simple, this being such a tiny tank. Besides the crab, we'll have three feeder guppies (Poor Man's Endlers, I like to call them), five nerites, and five amano shrimp.

Planting will consist of dwarf hairgrass and Valisneria nana, both of which are said to do well in brackish conditions. I'll probably have a sprig or two of floating hornwort, which should be good both for water quality and habitat. I also plan on keeping a back corner clear for a rotating gallery of experiments.

Got the hardscape and substrate in tonight, filled it, and let the crab go in there. Couldn't find my camera, but hopefully will get a few pics up soon. (Sometimes I miss my old Canon AE1, just because it was a lot harder to misplace)

    Wish us luck!

well that sounds good to me. some times it is best to give in to the youngsters and wife. it is great that you were thoughtful in making sure that the little martial arts expert has an appropriate home. I am sure there are so many who don't. I was one of them as a kid. mine finally crawled out the airline and made a mad dash for it. found his poor dehydrated body at the bottom of the stairs to the basement.

Lol Tom and congrats on your new tank-well both of yours. The tank sounds like a neat experiment, and as I say once you have names a fish/invert at a fish store-they really are yours- so you were doomed as soon as you named him.

Can't wait for photos or a video of the tank.

BTW, Matt those are some great links and I may just have to start a fiddler crab tank too...how neat!

This part in the PFK article caught my eye

"During heavy rains they can find themselves in pure fresh water. When a big wave breaks they can be washed into saltwater again. However, keep them in aqua-terraria with strong brackish or pure marine water."

    Congrats on your new pet!
I'm delighted for your daughter to have her own tank. You need a medal for stepping back and letting her pick the décor. (I know it isn't easy to let go of your own tankdreams like that!)

Yeah, thanks for the links, Slap.

OK, a few pics. First of all, I found this in the Angkor tank this morning. I read on several forums that fiddlers can't molt in fresh water. Tain't so!
    100_0014.jpg

Here's the basic setup. Plants should go in Thursday or Friday.
    100_0015.jpg

The crab is currently hiding under the castle. We had a bit of a scare this morning because we couldn't find him. I don't think there's a way he can climb out, but the lid on this thing is REALLY flimsy, so I couldn't rule it out. I happened to walk in and spot him in the open, just as he dashed into the hole under the castle. I think the bright light is stressing him out. I don't know if you can see it in the picture, but the "land area" is just a piece of driftwood lying parallel to the surface. I'm going to draw down the water a bit and put some emergent java ferns from the Angkor tank on the wood, so he'll feel a bit more secure. I think he's going to feel a LOT better after some plants are in there.
