At times like this I really feel the limitations of being colorblind. From what I can see, the garden looks lovely! Good job!

Thank you. It's a lot of work, especially since I refuse to use toxic weedkillers in the flowerbeds, and dig out the weeds, instead. The little lizards, frogs and ribbon snakes appreciate that, as do the ground-foraging birds. Time-consuming but well worth it. The thistles exploded this year, and I'm determined to get rid of all of them before they flower and set seed. Have most of them out, now. The little ones that come back get zapped with cider vinegar.

Does apple cider vinegar help to kill many weeds? I pour boiling water on the dandelion roots to melt the protective wax coating, but love to read about new non-toxic methods of controlling weeds.

It's beautiful, good for you, a nice sense of accomplishment and something for you to enjoy for years.

Cider vinegar will kill small Canadian thistles. It might kill other weeds as well, with varying degrees of effectiveness. It really only works on small new thistles that just poke up out of the soil. If the thistle has grown to any size, one has to dig or pull it out. It's the acid in the vinegar that kills. It turns the thistles black. I've seen it have some limited effect on wild grasses, and it will even turn horsetails brown. And they're very hard to kill. Even RoundUp won't work on horsetails. I have the vinegar in a spray bottle and spray it undiluted directly onto the plant. I try to cover the plant completely. Obviously, it isn't practical to use it on large plants. At first, I was using distilled white vinegar, until someone told me that cider vinegar is stronger and works better.

I've found that as I've conditioned our clay soil over the years to make it more suitable for my perennials, the weeds grow faster and more robust in it, too. Seems there are a lot more this year, and because it warmed up earlier and has stayed warm longer, they've really gone to town. While fertilizing helps my flowers grow better, the weeds take advantage of it, too. There are trade-offs. Better growing conditions, the more weeds to put up with -- but not for long. I'm petty persistent at getting rid of them.
