What were your hardness levels? TDS? Temperature? The store usually tests for water conditions. Tetras and guppies like different water parameters. That being said, fish can adapt to a certain extent. My mother keeps guppies with her red and black phantom tetras, but they are not known for their nippiness. I think the black and white skirts are bit more nippy. Guppies are stupid and friendly, they don't get out of the way very well of more aggressive fish.

I loved my columbian and hy511 tetras. They better suit what you have already for size and behaviour. If you get a larger group of tetras (about 6-8), I don't see them hide. The Columbians are a beautiful grey/blue with a bright red caudal fin, and the hy511s are a pretty pink with some black.
