That's why a large WC is in order, depending on how much ammonia registers

If ammonia was 2ppm, would you double-dose Prime and still detox enough all the ammonia? Triple-dose for 3ppm?

I completely support the large water changes though. It makes sense that the ammonia is roughly cut in half after doing a WC if you are changing 50% of water. Some have done fin-high (75-90%) WCs when in a bind. The more water you remove and replace (at a time), the faster the ammonia lowers or any toxin is removed. You can change out as much water as you want, just try not to let the aquarium walls dry and don't disturb the filter.

You mentioned you are testing with airstones, you have not changed your filter lately or anything, right?

I see it on this one.

I can see the difference between 0ppm and 0.25ppm. It's a very subtle greenish tint, but 0ppm has no green at all. You're not alone though, I've seen 0.25ppm being mistaken for 0ppm before even at the chain LFS.

I was told that prime only neutralizes ammonia temporarily. Is that true?

Yes for 24-48 hours, and then the ionic bond with ammonia degrades and it is released again. With a healthy colony this ionic ammonium is consumed by the filter or plants within that time frame.
