Iím looking forward to seeing how this developed myself. Going in a completely different direction to what Iím used to.

The cycle is well and truly underway.

Ammonia 0.25 ppm (so Iíve dosed back up to 2.0ppm
Nitrite 2-5ppm (hard to distinguish between the two)
    Nitrate 40-80ppm

Iím a bit surprised how quick this cycle is going. The place where im getting the stocking does not get them in until next week and then they have to quarantine!

Might have to add regular ammonia doses to keep the bacteria going if the cycle completes quite a bit before the fish are ready.

Glad to hear the cycle progresses

Remember, you should wait until ammonia reaches 0 before dosing again, but should be no harm done

    Iím going with pseudotropheus saulosi.

At first I struggled to find any locally and thought I would have to order them online. Managed to locate a private breeder/importer just 20 minutes away from where I live.

That is great! I always look for private breeders over ordering or LFS fish. Locally raised on water that is similar to yours is the best route to go for healthy fish IME.

Ammonia is down to zero now from 2.0ppm two days ago.

    Nitrite is somewhere between 1-2ppm

I've dosed ammonia back up to 2.0ppm and I'll test tomorrow to see how much has gone.

Question is, the local breeder hasn't got the fish available yet. I was told that he would have them in at some point this week, but then I imagine that he will have to quarantine them for a bit?

What do I do if my cycle completes significantly early before the fish are ready? Do I just keep dosing ammonia daily until they are ready? If I do keep dosing daily, would it be best to do regular water changes so I don't have to do basically a 100% change just before I collect the fish?

Oh, the breeder didn't grow them himself. Well that cancels my comment about similar water parameters.

I would add ammonia when it reaches 0ppm. I'd do a big water change before adding the fish to make sure nitrates are nice and low, but you could do regular WCs the same as you had fish if you really wanted to.

Well my ammonia went from 2.0ppm to zero in 24 hours.

Just my nitrites that need to catch up. Still reading 2.0ppm. But atleast it hasnít gone up.

Maybe you missed your nitrite spike. Idk, you have nitrates right?

I've honestly never done a fishless cycle, I just keep going from my 1st cycled tank. Maybe you would see nitrite after dosing ammonia all at once. I think you are cycled though. Well, when your ammonia hits zero, dose more ammonia until you get the fish in there.

Itís the fish time I have done a proper fishless cycle from scratch so Iím not 100% sure what to expect.

I have always had access to pre/cycled media before so itís only really been a mini cycle for a few days.
