Agreed. Have any come down on you for keeping fish in “prisons”?

I couldn't agree more. Public aquariums are not only inspiring, they're educational. They make folks want to learn. A kid sees that Blue-Ringed Octopus in an environment that simulates its natural one as closely as possible, and is so fascinated by it that he or she researches it online or at the library, and learns all about the animal's natural behaviors, including its defenses. The worst danger to our natural world is human ignorance and/or indifference. Public aquariums help people to learn, appreciate, and care. If we were to get rid of all aquariums, we would be depriving millions of people of an enriching experience. For whom would that be more harmful -- us, or the sea creatures? I think it's an even toss-up. BOTH would suffer immensely.

I agree that there are some very shady things happening in the aquarium hobby. For instance, I am in a loricariidae group that constantly has different people from lets just say, "not as regulated" countries, that are illegally importing all forms of wild catfishes. On the other hand there are countless fish farms that have taken the pressure off catching wild fish and the locations where we are importing wild fish are now being protected by locals because they get more money from ornamental fish than logging companies.
