It does not expire but it will get clumpy if it gets moisture in it. As long as you keep it sealed in a dry environment you shouldn't have too many issues with it.

Yeah it is haha You're looking at an average of $30 just to make a 55g batch of water, depending on brand.

Salt mixes are just mineral salts; there's nothing to go bad. They can be stored indefinitely. If it gets clumped up from moisture, you can break and stir up the salt before using. Unless you think there may have been contaminates from other chemicals getting into your salt, there is no reason to toss out the old and buy more.

it is the stuff used to mix up salt water for a marine aquarium.

I don't have an immediate use for it and it is just a small batch to mix up 10 gallons so not really a monetary loss esp since I got it for free.

That's salt treatment for freshwater tanks :) OP is referring to the stuff you get to make saltwater for marine tanks.

There are different brands out there but this is the stuff I use:

Yep. A lot of us try to wait for big sales from distributors and then buy the stuff in bulk to try to cut down on costs. It's also why so much effort is made to improve nutrient export in saltwater tanks so that frequent and large water changes aren't so critical. Refugiums, protein skimmers, and all kinds of filter media that remove nitrates and phosphates are used in the marine side of the hobby to help stretch out the amount of water that needs to be changed out.
