    Default 55 Gallon Stocking

    0 Not allowed!
Hello, going to be setting up a 55 gallon tank by the end of summer, first one since I was a kid. It's going to be heavily planted with driftwood, likely will be running two aquaclear 110s.

I was thinking of the following stocking, what do you guys think?

    15 Cardinal Tetra
    15 Penguin Tetra
    15 Cherry Barbs
    10 Marble Hatchetfish
    15 Dwarf Chain Loaches
    10 Panda Cories
    1 Clown Pleco
A bunch of cherry red shrimp too

I have a feeling that this is probably overstocked so any help would be appreciated.

Looks good to me, with 2 filters

You can always plug in your numbers/fish here and see what they say, but to me they're a bit conservative

Would Kuhlii loaches also be compatible with what I have? I love them too and would like to include them but I'm unsure of that as well.

Whether a tank is overstocked is usually a matter of personal opinion, so you'll get different answers from different folks.

I tried similar stocking levels in a 55g a couple years ago and while the tank parameters were fine, I definitely noticed a difference in behavior in the animals when stocking levels climbed too high. If it were me, I would adjust the numbers to:

    10 cardinals
7 penquins (these get fairly big)
    10 cherry barbs
    10 marbles
    7 chain loaches
    10 pandas
    1 pleco

That all being said, I'd be wary in regards to keeping penguins alongside the barbs. Both species can be boisterous, and I'm worried that two schools of rambunctious fish in a 55g that is stocked with a bunch of other animals may lead to aggression from the penguins and barbs and hiding behavior from the other animals.

Kuhlis are very small and tend to hide a lot at the bases of plants and in the driftwood. I do not see an issue as far as compatibility with the others as they are peaceful timid animals, but you're going to be having a lot of bottom dwellers crammed together.

Kuhlis would be fine with a sand substrate, they like to dig alot...and many times, they hide alot, as well, you'll see them more at night

Make sure you have lots of hiding places if you're going to add neocaridina. Lots of dense plants, things like cholla wood, and even some dense moss. Pretty much everything in your list will eat a shrimplet if the opportunity arises, so you need to have lots of hiding spots available for the shrimp.

Bioload-wise that should be okay, though I'm not sure how well the shrimp will play with the loaches or the tetras.
Instead of 2 aquaclear 110s, have you considered a single canister filter?

Just a small note, you will need screens over the filter intakes.

Never have used one before, don't know much about them, how to maintain them/etc.
