Pretty much the same as the bonded stuff I get....

I usually put 2-3pads in a whisper HOB fills up the media space and does some great mechanical filtration. I also buy big slabs of generic sponge which I cut to fit canister trays and HOBs

Get most of my filter media on CLL Pet Supplies on Ebay....you can buy pounds of ceramic rings for less than a little box at Petsmart. Then of course basic junk like airstones, airline, etc is really cheap. Those Aquaneat LEDs kind of suck...so I wouldn't buy those but usually CLL has SunSuns for less than other vendors too.

Yeah...I know a lot of folks are moving away from sponges in their canisters. I like the larger pore foam as a first stage prefiler for my ceramic media just to catch the large particles. Tends to keep my filter media from clogging as easily. Ill usually do 1 layer of blue foam, then a layer of green foam with the remainder of the baskets stuffed full of ceramic media or pond crushed lava....keeps my canisters from clogging up and keeps me from cleaning them very much.

If memory serves me correctly, marc has a Whisper EX70 on the tank? The EX70 uses a "clam shell" frame into which a new cartridge is fitted? He doesn't need the new cartridges. The clam shell can be filled with either foam or floss, snapped closed and fitted back inside the filter housing, there's really no need to buy cartridges. If polyester quilt batting is used it can be wrapped around biomax or other bio media.

That's exactly what I did with my little Whisper. I tore the cartridge apart, removed the carbon, used the floss as the first layer and filled the rest up with ceramic media. That way you won't lose much of the BB already on the cartridge. I can use up most of the media already in the filter (except for the carbon which I don't feel is necessary (in my planted tanks anyway) and still add more ceramic media.

I hate to say this, but I really suggest you get the filter issue sorted out before you add more fish. It's not because of aggression that I suggest this. It's because your current filter setup is fighting to process the waste bioload of your fish as it is. Add some more and it will be even harder to get the tank cycled. Add more fish before modifying the filter (at least) and it might be impossible to have enough BB to accommodate the bioload. Once you have a second filter, be it a canister or a second HOB, you'll have enough biomedia to provide for BB to grow.

I have not broken down my tank since it was suggested that it didn't need it. My water is clear and all the fish are doing great. I do have snails and a petricola cat. When I feed, every speck of food is gone.

I do the water changes because I can't tell if the ammonia reading is really ammonia or the non toxic form from the Seachem's Prime. None of the fish seem stressed and actually seem used to the routine. Color, movement and appetite are all normal.

The API ammonia test should be completely yellow when tested 24 hours after a WC. You say the water is clear, which is good, but what exactly are your test results today: ammonia/ nitrites/ nitrates?

^^Exactly, only test ammonia/ammonium 24 hrs after a water change. This is to give your beneficial bacteria a chance to process it. Tell us your ammonia, nitr-I-te, and nitr-A-te levels 24 hrs after a WC. Pls post results here so we can help you.
