    Default Any leaves to Avoid?

I want to do leaf litter for a new tank I'm setting up. Catappa ends up being about a $1 a piece which is an ok price in my opinion but I want a different look than that. I've done Magnolia leaves before, boiled them, cut off the stem and used them before and it worked relatively well. I have some scattered leaf litter in my yard right now. Looks to be a lot of varying oak + some smaller leaves. Anything I should be avoiding? I'm assuming all forms of maple is a no go.

    A dollar a piece?....that's high, here's the ones I get, around 30 cents each

I've tried various leaves from my yard, but they end up breaking down into a million little pieces, and make a mess in my tanks...IAL's just decompose until nothing is left but the stem and veins that stay together, all in one piece, easy to remove and replace w/out making a mess

We just tried magnolia leaves, which are supposed to be safe, but they got funky very quickly so we removed them (smelled like rot on day 3). Don't know if it was a bad batch.

I have been trying to find leaves online other than tannin's stuff which is great but very-very overpriced. Can find guava, magnolia and oak (2 types) on ebay in "bulk" from ounces to gallons. But some of the more specialty leaves that you can find on Tannin's site-you can't find anywhere except as tea leaves, and usually not whole.

    On a botanical tangent:
Isn't it frustrating to try to add botanical s and find limited sources for them-well I really can find only one.
I will be using leaves, pods and chunky coco noir in a couple of my tanks, but I can get 20 oz of noir for reptiles for $15.99 vs 1 oz for $8 at Tannin's. I will have to use them for some other items, but if anyone is looking to start a business, this would be a great area-but go easy on the pricing for us fellow hobbyist, and you will be a hit.

Also if anyone knows of good sites for botanicals for decent $, that would be great.

    Sorry for the tangent...

I tried to search to see if maple leaves were safe, what I came up with is if you pick them up after they have fallen naturally, the sugars are re-consumed by the tree prior to the tree dropping. In the fall I gathered a bunch of different mapls leaves (we have a ton of maple trees here), dried them and used some already in my Blackwater tank. They do dissipate into bits, but that's ok IMO in a Blackwater tank, they stain the water nicely.
