Thanks. Its hard in my tank to spot any eggs or fry. The rocks and planst hide everything, but at least it provides awesome shelter.

That's a bonus because it makes it hard for the other fish to find them too.

Having that plant cover especially in a community tank is so beneficial. I found 8 diamond tetra fry last year over 2-3 months that made it due to a large mass of moss in my tank. I only had 2 adult diamonds at the time along with 8-9 of the HY511 tetras and my LFS wasn't having luck getting any for me. So those 2 finally became 10. I later removed the moss as it was getting scraggly and had a lot of algae so I didn't see any other fry beyond those 8 - until a week ago. Whatever little pieces of moss I didn't get out before grew just enough to hide this one little guy.

I'm now keeping my eye on this fry and on this small corner of the tank to check for future potential survivors. It's a bit of a dirty, messy clump which I would love to remove, but I have to wait now til this guy is bigger and out and about. I have some healthier, fresh moss just hanging out in a jar that I'll probably replace it with since I now know the diamonds spawn easily and the moss will protect at least a few fry. .

I have a love/hate relationship with moss in larger tanks. So long as the tank doesn't have a strong -or any current the moss behaves. Just a bit of current and it becomes a messy moss infestation in every nook of the tank. I had some Christmas moss in the 75 once and it took months after I removed the majority of it to get 99% of it out of the tank. I kept finding clumps of it on my background or in the anubias roots with every water change and it took a couple month to finaly be rid of it.

Than being said I am planning on two 30 gallon Pseudomugil/Gertrude rainbow fish tanks and part of the bottom of each of those tanks will be scaped with a Christmas moss floor specifically to help the eggs/fry survive to adults. Christmas moss because of all the mosses it grows the fastest, stays together better than java and provides better coverage than the java or flame moss and is not as expensive or fussy as the fissidens mosses which like higher lights and faster waters-some prefer colder water too.

The time that I had the Christmas moss in the 75 is when I also had one diamond tetra fry show up too. Moss is very good for that.

I agree with that love/hate description. Healthy moss can look very nice if kept trimmed and shaped properly - it takes some work and I'm lazy. I think mine is Christmas moss, too, although it now looks nothing like the healthy clumps I used to have and used to sell all the time to my LFS. And for me it's somewhat like pesty MTS - if it's in one tank, it somehow finds its way into all tanks, with a few exceptions. I pull stringy strands out all the time from some of my tanks but I now have a huge healthy bush in one of my 20g tanks from just a few strands I didn't get.

But my 40B tank is a mess anyway and needs a complete overhaul. I recently ripped out a lot of java ferns (I have these everywhere also) and got some LFS credit, the few small crypts are doing nothing, and one huge anubias is an ugly algae mess. So if this ugly little moss mass keeps this fry safe, he can have it for now.

Sorry to get off topic in this thread. I get excited about surprise fry - yours and mine - and I'm OK with having a reason for now to delay redoing this tank.

    Sorry
