    Default Natural roommates?

    1 Not allowed!
Hello again! It's been quite some time since I've been on. We moved and I opted to get rid of my fish and tanks due to not having the time/energy/ability to move them easily. Now that I've been settled in my new home for a while I'm interested in creating a tank from scratch for a betta, but with a catch.

I want to make a tank that is as natural as possible to a betta. I'm well aware that the domestic betta is a good cry from his ancestors, but I still want something reminiscent of the slow streams and waterways they'd inhabit historically. To that end I was wondering... what other small-ish fish live in the same area? Shrimps? Maybe even small amphibians (like a newt or something).

The tank I'm planning to make will be (roughly) 36 inches long, 18 inches deep, and either 12 or 18 inches tall (not sure how deep I want to make it since I'm going to have "banked" edges on at least 1.5 sides (basically all of one short side and about half a long side), to accommodate plants).

I know I'll be keeping a single male betta in the tank, but I want to make it more... wild and natural, so I'd need some ideas for roommates he could have safely and naturally.

Some of the smaller and more peaceful rasbora or danio species perhaps?

That's a big tank for a single betta.

You could try a community tank, with the suggestions above...sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, but with a tank that big I would consider other fish to go along with the betta.

If it were me, I'd get the betta a 10 or 15G, and fill that other tank with fish, lots of possibilities

Just what I find that grabs my attention (and is healthy, of course).

are rasboras and danios from Thailand and the like?

yes it's a big tank, but it's meant to simulate a completely natural environment, in which betta's tend to have about 3 square feet of water that they defend as their territory (keep in mind, some of it wont' be "water" as well, due to banking and flooring)

Rice fish sound interesting, i'll look into them.

I'm also considering a few invertebrates and possibly an amphibian if things are able to be set up properly for everyone to coexist.

Harlequin rasbora would fit the bill, they are from the area you are interested in, stay small, peaceful, colorful, easy to find and keep. A group of 10 would look great with your Betta ;-)
