Default Tiger Barbs re-energized my tank

I have had my tank set up for close to two years now.Its A 65 gallon tank when I first set it up my first fish were Black ruby Barbs boy do I love those fish after A couple of weeks I added Diamond tetras then A couple of rubber nose plecos,Since I have had my tank I have lost A total of one yes just one Diamond tetra that Ruby's on the other hand I just can't get A feel for what may be going on since I have had my tank set-up I cannot count how many Ruby's I have lost and I just cannot put my finger on it.No matter what I do every so often I lose A Ruby one here one there and always very sparatically and not always right after A WC I just lose them randomly and never at the same time.I try and keep my numbers at 12 & 12 but I cannot always get the ruby's from my LFS all the time so I was grabbing them when I could. This last go around after losing about one A week for the last month or so I pretty much have given up on the Ruby's and decided to go another route. Not being able to put my finger on it was very frustrating.

    Temp: check 76
    PH check 7.2
    15-20% weekly water changes
    ammonia 0
    nitrite 0
nitrate between 20-40 it comes out A tad high from my tap(don't really think this was effecting them though this is the only thing I can think of)
Phosphate is A bit high but did not want to eliminate it completley as I have live plants

My Ruby's kind of hung from the middle to lower parts of my tank where as my Diamonds near the top.

So back to my post not wanting to keep adding Ruby's only to keep replacing them I kind of gave up on them my Diamonds were/are doing great as I lost only one in two years so I brought them back to my LFS and got Amixture of tigers (4) regular (4) Green & (4) Albino I also added another rubbernose the two I have are always up front & center cleaning my glass never really hidingso I added one more to the mix.

So anyway its been about two weeks and adding the tigers have infused life back into my tank, its funny how adding A different species of fish can really livin up A tank the diamonds now swim at all levels of the tank and are alot more active I have even saw them trying to school with the rambunctious rowdy barbs almost like when you put A young dog with An old dog sometimes the old dog will become more active thats almost what it looks like in this case not that the diamonds are old but they kind of kept to themselves when housed with the Rubys now they swim alot more actively at all levels of my tank even trying to school with the barbs at times.

Before adding the Barbs feeding time was exciting but now its A free for all and even the diamonds get into the frenzy even while free swimming the diamonds now longer keep to themselves at the upper levels they are busy swimming side to side up and down all over the tank not in just one area the tigers have really sprung to life into my tank its kind of cool how adding/Swapping out A species of fish can change A tank so dramatically sometimes in changes it for towards the bad in my particular situation its for the good as the Diamonds have become alot more active.I'm sure its because of the tigers high energy demeanor and high activity level that the Diamonds are looking to swim and play with them its really cool to watch the transformation.

Tigers usually get A bad wrap but in my case they have really brought life and activity back into my my tank!!

Still scratching my head as to why I kept losing Ruby's but if my tigers stay healthy I think it won't be as bad giving up on the Ruby's!

Glad to hear the tigers are working out for you, I really like them, but as you know, you need to keep them in good numbers and with fish that can "hold their own" against boisterous fish, which diamond tetras can certainly be.

When you had the BR's, were they intimidated at all by the diamonds, especially at feeding time?...were they getting their fair share to eat?

I have 12 & 12 on both the tigers and Diamonds,The ruby's were eating well so I still scratch my head at why they kept dying it was alot more mellow tank with the Ruby's they kind of kept to themselves if anything the ruby's kind of took charge during feeding time and the Diamonds kind of cleaned up after them. Now its all hands on deck I think the Diamonds sense with the Tigers if they don't try and eat they won't get any.So far so good the tigers are not really bothering the Diamonds & vice versa they are actually interacting more with one another than when the RB's were in there its the oddest thing the RB's were far less rambunctous than the tigers and the Diamonds were kind of just chill, now with the tigers in there they venture all over the tank.

I still have a fondness for Tiger barbs even for all the aggressive nature, they were the second fish I ever kept ;-)
