    Making the water harder I can do. They need shells right? (it's in the name) and I think shells make the water harder.

    Yes you can add escargot shells, which you can buy from Amazon

    Online is your best resource...TheWetSpotTropicalFish typically has them available. But shellies are wonderful little fish and they will certainly breed for you if given ample shells for territory.

    Only if you put a pair together, guess I was thinking of a single male or female with some dithers.
