Is the 5G heated and filtered?....they would be OK in the main tank, until you start adding ammonia

I hope you are not jumping the gun since your tank is not cycled yet. I would think that if you add ammonia to cycle this will kill the snails. I have never added anything except plants to an uncycled tank.

I tend to agree with Silbar, snails need a cycled tank, just as fish do.

If you had your test kit, you may be able to add them to the 5.5G, but it would need to be heated, depending on your room temp...then, you could test the water and do WC's as necessary to keep ammonia levels down

Can you delay getting the snails?

    Hm, you're right...
My room temp is OK, ithe extra tank is in a cozy bathroom and there's not a lot of temperature changes. The testing kit should arrive on Tuesday but I agree with you that it's not ideal.
I saw an opportunity, got excited, and didn't think it through. Let me see what I can do about the snails' arrival date, but otherwise I will just take them and do water changes daily/every other day until my testing kit arrives so that I can keep that in check.

I am using seachem prime on tap water which is almost definitely chlorinated.

ammonia: I found it after checking like 5 different places! It came in an opaque bottle so I will transfer it to a transparent bottle and see what happens when I shake it. It should only have a few bubbles at the top that go away, right? I will wait until my testing kit arrives before adding any, since I really don't want to accidentally add too much ammonia.

snails: I spoke to the person giving me the snails (the original purpose was to receive some coontail plants, which I did get) and he told me that he takes these out of his main aquarium and literally keeps them in a bucket of treated water. No filter, no heater, no cycling, nothing, and that the buggers keep on breeding for weeks on end in there. He gives them away to local aquarists as food and insisted that they are mega sturdy, and would be fine in an unheated/uncycled aquarium. So I took them and will see how they fare.

    Also RE: coontail plants -
I just kinda have them floating about my tank right now, as they should be from what I understand. I'm sure there's some cool things I could do with them for aesthetics, but since I don't know the plant so well I'll ask on here:
    1. hook them onto the filter so it gets a bit hidden (being mindful of the water input and output areas)
    2. wrap them around part of the mangrove root
    3. stick em in a corner and let them be (??)

Any suggestions are welcome regarding these plants! I got LOADS of them so I have a lot of wiggle room on what to do
