    Snails usually HH on plants, but it could have easily been driftwood if it stayed mostly wet the whole time, from origin to tank

    Here is a picture of the snail that I found today.

    Looks like a bladder snail to me, you'll find more if so sooner or later, they breed prolifically

    are there ways to keep these types of snails in check so that they don't over populate?

    That type of snail is referred to as a "Pest" snail. I advise removing the snail if you don't want a tank-full. You can pay very close attention not to overfeed, or add some assassin snails to control the population, but those snails can get out of control quickly. If you'd like some snails, nerites or mystery snails are a popular choice.

    Was able to take care of the pest snail problem shortly after you helped to identify the snail angelcraze. Woke up this morning to find a new baby swimming around the tank too. Looks like it may be a mickey mouse platy from the two dots that was on its tail.
