Default Mystery Snails with Assassin Snails

    1 Not allowed!
Recently, we purchased 5 mystery snails from Petco. Two of them went into the 40B (it has assassin snails, lots of them), two into the 29G (no assassins) and one into the 10G (no assassins)....we bought them a couple of weeks ago.

I've read differing opinions on keeping assassins with mysterys, but I have done it in the past with no issues.

Saturday morning when I turn the tank lights on in the 40B, I noticed a large "lump" in the tank, on the sand near the front glass. It was one the the mystery snails (the smaller of the 2 I put into this tank) absolutely covered in assassin snails.

I though for sure he had just died, and they were scavenging the remains. Knocked the assassins off of him and netted him out. There were 2 assassins wedged into the opening of his shell, had to pry them out. To my surprise, his operculum was tightly closed, and he had no odor. If you've ever encountered a recently deceased snail, you know the odor I am talking about, lol.

Figured I'd drop him into the 10G and wait it out. He didn't move all day Saturday or Sunday, but when I got home from work yesterday, he was cruising around the tank, munching away on algae.

I do not know why he was covered in assassins in the other tank...the larger mystery is still in that tank with the assassins, doing just fine.

So now, I have no clue if they are safe to keep together or not, at least with the smaller sized mystery snails.

No clue, here. I put three seemingly-healthy ivory mysteries (from Petsmart) into my 90g that has a handful of assassins. Within several weeks all three mysteries were dead. That being said, I also have two zebra nerites in the tank, as well, and those have been living side-by-side with the assassins for around a year.

I believe the mysteries just died and were eaten by the other animals in the tank, although why they died in such an established tank that has other invertebrates that have been just fine is beyond me. I monitor everything from nitrogen compounds to pH to TDS in the tank and nothing has ever been off.

They were probably just weak stock, I've encountered those before that didn't live long at all.

I think their average lifespan is just a few years anyway, for the healthy ones.

I just wonder what was going on here, for them to gang up on him like that but cause no (obvious) harm?...maybe one stung him, and his screams attracted the others, lol

Thanks for sharing your experience with mixing the two, Matt. I can well see the reason we all continue to read differing opinions on if they are compatible.

Welcome, Rivers...I used to have no problem mixing the two, but now I have some doubts...lots of conflicting info on the internet, too

I know when I added a single assassin to a tank with a mystery snail, the assassin as soon as he popped back out of his shell beelined straight to the mystery quite literally almost over the top of two bladder snails and promptly attacked the mystery snail. I pried them apart as the assassin had gotten himself wedged between the trap door and the shell and put the mystery in another tank. My mystery snail was never quite the same and eventually passed several weeks later. I don't know of it was from the sting or not but I just don't have mystery snails anymore, at least not for a while yet.

    Thanks for sharing.

I've never had any issue with the two different snails until recently, mystery snails have always seemed too "fast" moving for assassins to give them any problems...but it's worth noting, these Petco snails were not very active at the beginning...go figure

A pic of the assassins right after removing the mystery snail...note the lack of color in the shells of many of them, I'm not sure what the cuase of that could be...inbreeding?...I actually like the pale coloring of some of them
