If it's still unclear to anyone look to the left for a pic before and after they are submersed in water. They are literally like 15 cents each. I grab them at the home center that sells fish stuff too. They come in a few sizes.

My tap water comes with a heavy dosage of nitrates (about 10ppm) right out of the tap. I am thinking about changing to RO water but that is terrifying because of the pH shift my tap coming in at a horrifying 8.4 and the water is extremely hard.

Right now I am managing to keep nitrates around 7 in my planted tanks performing 50% water changes twice a week. Would it be better to do one larger (75%) water change once a week even though it is introducing more of my cities horrible water at a time?

With a tap ph that much higher than the tank ph, I'd keep doing the smaller changes biweekly.

I agree with Slappy, go slow. MY 8.3PH water is so buffered that huge RO additions don't move the pH at all, but it's best to do some testing and see what happens after a WC. No nitrates is better of course, but 10 is very manageable in a planted tank.
