Nice! I love these little guys but they don't love my water. I gave up trying to keep them long ago.
When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

I got a group of 9 of them six years ago. 8 of those died off gradually over the first couple years, but one of them has been going strong since then. Life span is said to be 3-5 years so I guess they did all right for me.

I've got a few of these guys in different tanks that are now over 3 years old. Seems to me if they make it past the first 30 days, they'll last through their normal life expectancy. Like these fish a lot.

Awwwww :) They are so cute! My otos didn't make it in my tank, they didn't last long and I gave the last one to a friend with like 12 others. He lived in his tank....I think my tank was too clean, no diatoms, and the little stressed out otos wouldn't eat the MTS covered veggies, maybe because they weren't used to veggies, maybe because they were too timid. Mine had red cheeks, meaning they were stressed, yours look great :)

I have experiences about a 25% mortality rate in my otos that go in my normal tap water tanks. As mentioned by some of the posts above, the ones that do make it tend to be fairly hardy and will last years.

These ones are in RODI water that has been re-mineralized for optimal animal and plant health. Acidic (~5.8-6.0 pH from CO2/carbonic acid+RODI+tannins/leaf litter) and very soft water (6dgH, no carbonates), with TDS levels very low (around 120ppm) and nitrates are kept between 5-10ppm for plant growth.

There are currently 10 otos in this tank. I want to see if I can reduce the mortality rate by keeping them in more ideal water params along with a large group and no boisterous tank mates to keep stress as low as possible. I've only had them since last week so there is still time for the infamous die-off, but I haven't lost any so far.

Lights (Current Sat+ and Finnex Stingray) are on for about 18hrs to promote algae growth, and their diet is supplemented with Hikari wafers, fresh veggies, and all the microfauna provided by the powdered shrimp foods. So far they seem to be getting enough food to remain full and some have little bellies on them already.

They all had clamped fins the first several days, but most are now swimming around with fins fully erect.

One interesting difference with this tank is that they do not hang out on the glass much. For the most part they perch on the marsilea minuta or hug the driftwood.

    They are awesome fishies.

The mortality rate might have nothing to do with the tank they got in.

    What I have read :

These all wildcaught fish aren't (wel) fed over a long period of time after they are caught, transported, etc....

The bacterial fauna in their intestials sometimes seems to be killed by the lack of this. This appears an irreversible issue and cause them dieing in "our tanks".

I have read the same thing. I've never been successful trying to keep them for any length of time.

Not sure if they still do this, but aren't/weren't otos caught with dumping cyanide into the river? Personally, I try to stay away from wildcaught fish, but these poor otos aren't in the best shape when they make it to the LFS, they need a lot of TLC most of the time to get healthy again, but once they settle, they seem to be quite hardy in a stable aquarium. My friend actually sold his because he was tired of trying to breed them with no success, but they were soooo cute! I love those little guys!
