Okay so Saturday night I realized I have totally neglected our 5.5 Betts tank. Hadn't cleaned or WC IN 3 weeks. Then I noticed the filter stop pumping, impeller still running just no flow. So I did a WC and put an air stone it and ordered the filter in the picture. It came with the yellow piece in the second picture, which they call the biogrid. What's your thoughts on the biogrid? It's made out of hard plastic.

Any filter will work just add your media in the back compartment that plastic is just taking up space.

I really like Seachems Matrix for it's small size but extreme amount of surface area a small bag of it in the back of the filter would be plenty for your betta and snail.

I have a couple of filters, an Aqueon and an AquaTech, that use those plastic grids. They aren't pure rubbish, though. I had my Aqueon running on a tank that had ghost shrimp, a betta, and a mystery snail and never added any additional media and it worked just fine. The AquaTech was on another tank that had 150-200 shrimp, a betta, and a handful of assassins and never had any issues in that tank, either.

So off topic a tad but........I haven't rehooked up my filter on my rainbow tank all it has is a power head and a ton of plants no issues ! Going on 2-3 weeks now so I've been learning that the filter isn't as critical as once thought so I guess I'm doing a walstad method??

So would you guess that the dense amount of plants are processing the ammonia generated by the fish waste? I'm not sure I would be so brave as to chance running a tank without a filter to carry the BB. But I haven't read up on the Walstad methods.

I think it's a combination of the plants abilities to utilize ammonia and a factor of the nitrfying bacteria that as colonized inside the tank.

Call me crazy I like to experiment ;)

I checked water perameters n Sunday, I have always registered nitrates. After 8 days from last WC it was 0 ammonia 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates. TDS went up I think 4.
