I have been cycling this 29 gallon tank using ammonia for the first time... thought the nitrites were never going to go away! Yesterday they were pretty high, so again I added the ammonia to reach 2ppm and went to work. When I got home the ammonia was low but not gone, it was ok only been about 9 hours so I waited. 012 hours after I added it, it went to 0, decided it was time for a nitrite test and it was about 2.0 ppm and the nitrates are very high. Waited about for about 8 hours and gone the nitrites and ammonia were 0 gone. So now do I do a water change and add ammonia one more time and test everything before adding fish? Just do the water change and add fish? or ? Thank you so much.

I'm sure you will get differing opinions but this is what I do: Redose with a 1/2 dose of ammonia and wait another 24 hrs and repeat test . If ammonia and nitrites are still zero, then this is just a double check that the tank is consuming the ammonia in a day. It verifies the cycle is completed. Then do a water change to bring the nitrate level to below 20ppm. Then you can add fish.

Sounds reasonable to me, I will do that. I am just happy I saw the nitrites go, I was starting to think there was something going on, or rather not going on. :)

Nitrites always seemed to take the longest to disappear for me.

When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.

Thank you, now I will have to be a little more patient because I put to much ammonia in, forgot I was doing a half dose. Although the ammonia level went to 0 in 12 hours or less my nitrites are not gone yet, but it has not been 24 hours so I will wait.

As long as you didn't pour the bottle in it should still read 0ppm in 24 hours,, maybe a little longer.
