thanks for taking the time to write this helpful thread. Do you know any Hang On Back aquarium filters that have capacities larger than AquaClear filters?

No I do not, but I only have hands-on experience with the AC's and Top Fin brands.

Apparently the seachem tidal hobs have good holding capacity. And a decent reputation from what i have heard.

A couple of things I'd like to add:

When replacing the motor housing back onto the filter fox, as you turn it, you should feel the rubber seal catch and grip as it seals into place. If it doesn't do this, the motor may not be locked securely onto the filter box, or it may be on crooked. Be sure to hold it straight as you turn it, and don't tilt it.

Be sure to replace the lid on the top of the filter box when finished, and be sure it's clamps securely into place. Sometimes the lids of the larger ACs tend to warp, and it can be hard to seat them properly, and you may have to work with it to get it to seat all the way down, all the way around. It can be a hassle, but it's worth it to keep outside debris and unwanted external stuff from entering the filter box.

The lids to the smaller ACs usually clamp right down without any problem. They are less susceptible to warping.

Clamps?...mine just rest on the lid of the filters, no clamps involved...sometimes you have to make sure the intake tube is seated properly for the lids to rest completely on the filter housing, though

I wasn't referring to exterior clamps. I meant the lid clamping itself down securely on the rim of the filter box, that is, seating itself properly. No extra equipment involved. A poor choice of words, I now realize.
