    Default Stocking my 40 Gallon

    0 Not allowed!
    Hi Everyone,

I currently have a 40 gallon tank set up for about a year and a bit now and I was wondering what fish you guys think I should add the the tank. I currently have a a school of about 12 Harlequin Rasboras and about 10 Cardinal Tetras. I wanted to get another small school and I do not know what to add that would go with the fish that I currently have.

If you guys would help that would be awesome!!

    Thanks!!

You could up the numbers of the fish you have, and still add another couple of schools of different fish.

This is a 40 breeder?....how is it filtered?

You could up the cards to 15...then I'd get more tetras (I'm partial to them)...look at rummynose, glowlights, pristellas, emperors

You could have cory catfish for the bottom area, too....lots of choices

What is the ph, gh, and kh of your tank water and tap water?

I think an all harlequin rasbora, cardinal tetra tank would be awesome. You could add to your current shoals if your water parameters are right for them.

If you want another school consider one of these:

    Kerri Tetra
Bentosi Tetra, or Candy Cane Tetra, or HY511 - All of these are similar; sometimes considered the same fish

and of course, for the bottom, choose any of the hundreds of corydora species.

I think I would personally just stick with what you have, but add more to their schools to fill out the look of the tank if you feel something is missing. They are generally happier in larger schools, and a 40g feels cramped for three. At least to me anyway.

IF you are set on adding another species, I would go with some sort of bottom dweller that doesn't get very big. Khuli loaches are quite cute, but you'd need a bit of a foot print. They like to race around the bottom when they aren't hiding.

LOL....you must have never seen or heard of my 40B...different footprint than a 40H, but the OP could easily have 3 large shoals in this tank, I'd do 4...size of the fish and bioload are important factors to consider, of course

I've tried kuhlis twice, they hide/disappear, they're nocturnal so IME you won't see them nearly as much as a nice school of corys

I like the loach idea, instead of another school why not an angel, ram or apistogramma.
