Default Pool Filter Sand Which Brand

    0 Not allowed!
There are several pool filter sands on the market. Anyone know the best one to use as a substrate? I have a Lowe's here and a Ace Hardware where I live but that is about it. Thank You

Quickrete sand isn't the same as pool filter sand. PFS is sieved and graded to a relatively uniform particle size, and doesn't compact like play sand. Easier to maintain, and doesn't develop anaerobic pockets if left undisturbed too long like play sand.
If you want black "sand" check out Black Diamond or Black Beauty (same thing, name brand varies by location) sandblasting grit. It's actually coal slag, completely inert, main differences aside from color is that it's easier to rinse clean and doesn't encourage diatoms to run amok like the silica in sand does.

The manufacturer of this would beg to differ.

Fish for Life, I use this in 2 of my tanks, works great, plants grow well in it, it looks nice, and doesn't even require rinsing...best of all, it's inexpensive, around $6 or $7 for a 50# bag

Quickrete is the brand name and they make several different products. One of which is PFS .

If you can't find the good quality quartz-based # 20 or #30 grade density silica pool filter sand at a local pool supply store, or a big box store, here are a few good ones available @ Amazon, but they're pricier than PFS obtained @ pool supply shops, where the price is usually $10. to $15. for a 50 lb. bag.

They dont sell that at all lowes or. home depots.... I dont get that brand at any home depot in my area either. They do have #20 silica sand, but you need to rinse it.
