Default Does API Master Kit detect ammonium?

I'm trying to find out why my crystal shrimp tank isn't producing babies, despite having breeding adults and females that are constantly berried.

In talking to an individual on FB, it was discussed that the Amazonia substrate could still be leeching out ammonia. The guy told me that I need to do water changes like crazy because the low pH (6.3-ish) is converting the ammonia to ammonium, which he claims won't show up on a test, and he believes my tank is a soup of ammonium that is not toxic enough to harm the adults but killing off any babies.

I though the API Master Kit (liquid drops) will give results even if the compound is ammonium as opposed to ammonia. Wasn't that the whole thing with Seachem Prime? I thought Seachem claims that when Prime binds with ammonia it turns it into ammonium which is still detectable with the liquid test kits.

    Thoughts?

Tagging @Rocksor since he's got a fairly good grasp on chemical processes.

The API test kit does not differentiate between the two, it will show positive for ammonia if either is present

And that's precisely how I've understood it, as well. This individual is respected in the group as both a breeder of extremely expensive and delicate shrimp and vendor of high-quality products to other professional breeders. He's like Han, but focuses less on plants and more on foods and additives. So when he told me about the ammonium, I had to question myself...

The instructions for the API ammonia kit states that it detects total ammonia. This includes bound ammonia found in chloramine and ammonium. Seachem makes 2 tests that will test for free toxic ammonia NH3-.

Thank you for the additional confirmation, Rocksor!

Slightly off topic, but does a pH of 6.3/6.4 really turn ammonia into ammonium? That's the first I've ever heard of that.

Yes it does. There's enough free hydrogen ions H+ in lower PH to bind with ammonia NH3 and turn it into ammonium NH4+

I didn't care for chem, but I loved physics and astronomy. Bio was pretty cool, too.
