Those don't hold even bacteria to jump start a new aquarium. Ceramic media or sponges in cycled filters hold more bacteria.

When you say "some baby BN," how many babies and how big are we talking here?

I know this advice is beyond the scope of your filter question, but those tetras and barb species are schooling species. You should look into increasing their groups to closer to 8-10.

Ah yes that is my goal, the new tank is to help me do just that as we speak I have 12 baby BN in that tank a couple for my daughter and a couple for me, the rest will find new homes. This is kind of a long story but I have had the 50 for years and it has had many fish in and out of it. My tetras are about 4 years ? old I had more but lost one here and there. I decided I wanted to use real plants in the tank, then decided I wanted different substrate. Thought it would be easier to get another tank to put them in to do this and when it was finished put them back with more of there kind. Picked up a used tank (it had guppies/endlers in it) way to many..:( . I gave them away but when I was cleaning this tank up I found that hidden in the bottom was a BN and a clown loach. The loach was way up in a shell, the BN under a fake plant. Poor things, survived a ride in the back of my truck in about 4" of water. Anyway first thing I did was to try to lesson the load in that tank, gave away all the guppies. One person wanted to trade (3) baby BN for some of them, I agreed met him half way and he had all these BN bagged up for me. I put a divider in my 50 they are on one side and my fish on the other. Now I felt so bad for the clown loach I went a bought to very small ones to go with it (dumb should have just got rid of the one I had) but back to getting things right decided I needed yet another tank as the clown loach will be in the 50 for awhile. So you see I am over my head but trying to make it right. I want to get more Columbias for the new 29 gallon after it is planted and cycled, as well as plant the 50 for the clown loach. Crazy, I just wanted to plant my tank! That's what I get for not just saving money for a new tank. The one I am cycling came from goodwill for 8.00 . The 20 was 35.00 and came with everything. Overwhelmed.

    We love journals haha

It would be interesting to see follow along and see how it all comes together for you.

Just know that clown loaches become very large and need huge schools. Ideal homes for them approach 150-200gallons. Stores never tell their customers about the requirements for clowns :(
