Default Fish less Cycling And Other Options

    0 Not allowed!
Before I start the fish less cycle over again what other options can I try to produce bacteria for the cycle in general?. My local pet store I do not do business with so cant really ask them for any kind of media and if I could ask them I would not because the store well lets just say it shouldn't even be in business. They simply are in it for the money and nothing else so no help there.

I tried the Dr Tim's One and Only and it has became pretty obvious that the bacteria in the bottle was completely dead. The bacteria was not received in cold packs so I should of known that it would not work. I have a feeling that the cycle even though it has been just two weeks now has stalled. Nothing has changed on readings at all.

From past experience I have always had some sort of readings so am a little confused with the hole bacteria concept. I personally have just used the ammonia concept and have had good results but this time around seems to not be working for me. That was why I purchased some bacteria to see if I could boost and show readings of anything but of course nothing has of as yet.

There is no rush for the cycle to complete and I understand that sometimes it can take a long time to cycle but would hate to wait say a month or two and then still there be no bacteria. Should I just wait a month? Should I just start over and maybe try some other kind of bacteria in a bottle but save my filter even though the API test doesn't show any readings have changed doesn't always mean that some bacteria is not present?

I refuse to stock the tank with fish of any kind to help the process along the way I mean right now it would be senseless to do as they would most likely all die. I had a friend the other day ago suggest that I try prime or safe start and to just add some fish to the tank but I really do not feel comfortable with this concept.

I have never did this kind of concept or used either before so personally I know nothing about safe start or prime products. Sorry for the long post just trying to share as much information with you all as much as possible. For 14 days I have also tested the water and all readings are the same. I do not have any plants at this time.

I will be adding Java Fern later down the road as things progress. I also have my heater set to 78 and I have had my air stone going wide open as well. Am looking for others advice and or thoughts. Sorry if the post is long just trying to share as much information with you all as much as possible Thank You

What size tank is this?...what is your water source?...what kind of ammonia did you use?

If you don't use a water conditioner (Prime is the best one, IMO), and you are using tap water that is chlorinated, you will never get beneficial bacteria to grow.

20 Gallon Tank. API Tap Water Conditioner used when water was added to the tank. I used Dr Tim's Ammonium Chloride and Dr Tim's One and Only Bacteria. The lights have been left off and the air stone has been running non stop since day one to try to help the bacteria grow. But there looks like there is none present. I don't know if the Dr Tim's was a good batch of bacteria or not but when I did add it after shaking the bottle the water did become cloudy which is good. But I am pretty sure his video said to retest the water after 24 hours well I have tested it after waiting 48 hours and still a no go. Thank You

You don't need to leave the lights off, if you don't want to.

What is the temp of the tank?...bacteria grow faster at warmer temps, shoot for 82F.

How is the tank filtered?...what test kit are you using?...what is your water source, and does it test positive for ammonia?

    Is this a 20H or 20L?

I would add more filtration, it's best to have at least 2X the filtration capacity for a given size tank...my tank are 3X or 4X overfiltered.

I would also look into getting an adjustable heater, they are not expensive.

2 ppm for a 20G is fine to start, 4 ppm would be a bit much.

20 Gallon High 24 x 13 x 17. Yeah I know but one filter should not matter just to cycle a tank would it or heater? Also tested my water directly from the sink Ammonia is 0 ppm and the ph is good also.

It would quicken the cycle to have the water warmer than 78F.

I would add an AC30, nice little HOB filter, I have them on all of my tanks.

Depending on how you want to stock the tank, it's usually best to grow as much BB as you can, and they primarily inhabit your filters.

The thing is why would I buy more stuff now when I don't even know if there is any kind of bacteria in the tank already or not? Same with re doing the entire tank cycle again. There is no way of knowing if there is any bacteria or not so I have no clue what I should do really. Should I redo the tank and just use ammonia and no bacteria? Should I just try a shrimp. Should I try safe start and just add fish and hope they don't die? I understand fish less cycling can take a long time but I would hate to wait months for it to cycle and then it stall that would also be a waste of time also wouldn't it. I have no problem spending money if there is results in the end. But right now I don't see much changing in the process.

I have never used the Dr. Tims stuff, or packaged bacteria.

If it were me, I'd add a filter, get an adjustable heater, and use ammonia only.

This is the stuff many of us use, with great results.

For water conditioner, I'd never use anything other than Seachem Prime.
