Exclamation Help my babies are dying

Before I start, I have to say; I know this tank is overstocked, but I can't rehome the fish (nobody will take them, I've tried) and the petstore won't take them back.
I have a 20 gallon tank that I have divided into 2 halves. On one side is my male crowntail betta Ravioli, 3 black neon tetras, 1 algae eater, 3 red wag platys, a nerite snail, a mystery snail, and 3 ghost shrimp. On the other side is my betta Dog, 4 dalmation mollies, 5 neon tetras, 1 algae eater, 1 nerite snail, and 3 ghost shrimp. I have an aqueon 20g quietflow filter and no live plants (my snails eat them in a week). My water is cloudy and I have had 5 fish die so far (not included in the above count). WHAT CAN I DO???

Ha! No worse than my 10 neons, a betta, and a pleco in a 5g for my first tank!

I second Slap's inquiry. Can you give us the water parameters? If you don't have a test kit, you should get one asap. Very important/vital bit of gear to have when keeping aquariums.

If funds are tight and you can't get a kit right this minute, you can take a sample of your water to a local fish store and they will test it for you.

I'll take a sample in first thing tomorrow, I took a gamble and put a few drops of some ammonia remover stuff in to try and buy time

How long has the tank been set up?

    How was it cycled?

Tanks won't cycle in one week, and they won't do it on their own, either.

Last option is do massive daily water changes to let the bacteria play catch up if no one is willing to take those fishes. Massive would mean 80%-90% of the water daily.

If you can get your hands on some seeded media from a trusted source, that would speed things up as well.

Think with logic and rationality more than emotion. Act with moderation and consideration. Contemplate ideals and realistic goals and weigh out possibilities and options. Temper not with personal delusions or false hope but learn to accept and move on.
