Glad to hear your and your family are ok, along with the fish and beer. Thankfully this does not seem as bad as Rita Or Ike.
Good to hear y'all are fine, and the new house held up well....backyard doesn't look too bad, from what I can tell

It's good to see the water receded and everyone is doing well. When I was living in southern Vietnam or Thailand during the rainy season, the flooding can be pretty scary but that didn't seem to faze the local. Never had to deal with that as a kid since I was mainly in the mountains up in the northern regions but during my stay in SA and Southeast Asia, during typhoon or hurricane season; it was an interesting experience.

Those pumps are impressive -- how thoroughly the little lake has disappeared from your property and the street beyond.

It sounds self-defeating to release water from a dam while there's already flooding, but I understand why they have to do it. If the dam breaks, or there's spill-over, things can get deadly, fast. Even the highest, strongest dam can only hold so much for so long.

I notice some of you haven't lost your sense of humor in all of this ...

Sometimes, you gotta laugh, to keep from crying...if that makes sense

Yes, those pumps are invaluable at times like this...it's nice to have a seawall/storm levee protecting us from storm surge, but when it floods, something's got to get all of that water over the wall

Yes it does, humor is a coping mechanism.

Let's not forget that we were chatting about flood control dams that protect Houston, yup Houston and all it's people and infrastructure. Think of those dams as flow control (faucet) mechanisms. What happens when you have no flow control?

Anyway, Matt, help me understand something. There's Lake Sabine which is feed by the River of the same name. Then there's the lower Neches which flows into Sabine. Then there's the Gulf. Which of those sources of water is the bigger threat to you where you live at this time? I'm interested because I used to manage water.

The Neches river is closest to me, but it's banks are very deep, it's never overflowed, as far as I know, at least not in my area.
The Gulf is actually the biggest threat, when there is a storm surge, which luckily was only a few feet high at the upper Texas coast.

Storm surge from Ike is what devastated Bolivar Peninsula (where my sisters' cabins are) back in 2008

Right now, our biggest threat is more rain, which is forecast through Thursday.

Speaking of humor, this family sure has kept things "light", given their circumstance.

    Is that a pleco???
