Drylock has a texture to it as well

If you wanted more grit you can add a small amount of sand to the paint on the 2nd to last or last coat.

This is 2/3 of what I have done so far. I tore apart the first one I made. It was just bad.

That looks really good so far. With all the detail that you have in your background I would really stay away from using the Quikrete because it's going to fill in any fine detail you have and make it look like a blob. The Drylok is good because it's going to go on like a thicker paint but still give you that gritty look.

When I applied the Drylok to my background what I did for the first coat was I thinned it out with a little bit of water, that way it could go into all of the cracks and crevices. For the second coat I made the Drylok a slightly different color the so that I could see where I had painted and I hadn't fainted and I applied a second coat of the full strength. I repeated with a third coat coloring it a little darker gray again so I could see it in contrast to what had dried. And then the fourth coat was the actual painting of it an assortment of different colors. The first time I painted it I gave it 24 hours to fully dry, the following codes I gave about 12 to 14 hours I would put a coat on at night when I came home from work and let it dry overnight until I came back the next day and had time to paint it again. I was doing this in the fall so I was kind of pressed to get it done before the weather got so cold that I couldn't paint in the garage anymore.

Thanks for the advice. It will help a lot. I wasn't going to change colors for each coat, but it will make a big difference.
FYI, all that "detail" was created by breaking the styrofoam/scraping it with the utility knife. It was pretty messy and time consuming. I used a hot wire cutter I made from one of my old e-cigs to cut out the channels for the intake (left side 6 rows up) and soon the channel for the heater and output of my cannister filter.
I'm actually kind of proud of myself being as I figured out how to totally hide my heater while still having great water flow. I am going to put an air stone in the 1 1/2" PVC pipe with the heater to create suction, based on the same principles as an underground filter. I'm still trying to work out how to hide my powerhead. Maybe I'll insert some plexiglass into the the background and stick it to that.

Is this the right flavor of Drylock? I wanted to double check since I can't seem to find any info about it anywhere. Also, this acrylic paint should be okay to mix with the Drylock, right?

Not sure if you had photos you forgot to attach or links?

The acrylic Drylok is the one you want, comes in 1 and 5 gallon, and an assortment of colors. Any acrylic paint can be used like the acrylic craft pants (Folk Art, Americana, Craft Smart, Martha Stewart) or more expensive acrylic artist paints in tubes. Stay away from anything acrylic that is metallic, has glitter or other additives, or is glow in the dark.

    Ugh... Stupid attachments.

This is what I got. The paint is the right kind, but it's this the right Drylock?
